Westbound I-10 closed this weekend west of I-17 in Phoenix

Crews paving I-10 near South Mountain Freeway interchange

To allow construction crews to pave westbound Interstate 10 near the South Mountain Freeway interchange, the freeway will close west of downtown Phoenix this weekend.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between 35th and 67th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16. In addition, both ramps from Interstate 17 to westbound I-10 at the "Stack" interchange will be closed. The westbound I-10 on-ramp at 27th Avenue also will be closed.

Drivers should expect long delays at 35th Avenue, the first westbound exit west of I-17. As an alternate, drivers should consider exiting I-10 no later than I-17, then driving north to McDowell Road or south to Van Buren Street and traveling west to re-enter I-10 west of the closure.

Westbound I-10 drivers traveling beyond the Phoenix area should consider taking Interstate 8 west at Casa Grande and State Route 85 north from Gila Bend to re-enter I-10 in Buckeye. Drivers on southbound I-17 planning to drive west of Phoenix should consider Loop 101 or Loop 303 to connect with I-10.

Additional work along I-10 west of downtown Phoenix is expected to require closures and lane restrictions on weekends throughout September and October.

The 22-mile South Mountain Freeway is scheduled for full completion in 2020, although traffic is expected to begin using the freeway earlier. It will provide a long-planned direct link between the East Valley and West Valley and a much-needed alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix. Approved by Maricopa County voters in 1985 and again in 2004 as part of a comprehensive regional transportation plan, the South Mountain Freeway will complete the Loop 202 and Loop 101 freeway system in the Valley.
