Drivers who use Interstate 17 in north Phoenix should expect south- and northbound closures at Happy Valley Road this weekend while crews set girders for one of the new bridges at the interchange. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to expect delays and be prepared to use detours while these closures are in place:
-
Southbound I-17 will be closed at Happy Valley Road from 10 p.m. Friday, June 28, to 7 a.m. Saturday, June 29. Detours: Drivers can use the Happy Valley Road off- and on-ramps to re-access southbound I-17 or use eastbound Jomax Road to southbound 19th Avenue to Pinnacle Peak Road to reconnect with southbound I-17.
-
Northbound I-17 will be closed at Happy Valley Road from 10 p.m. Saturday, June 29, to 9 a.m. Sunday, June 30. Detours: Drivers can use the Happy Valley Road off- and on-ramps to re-access northbound I-17 or use eastbound Pinnacle Peak Road to northbound 19th Avenue to Jomax Road to reconnect with northbound I-17.
East- and westbound Happy Valley Road will remain open; however, expect heavy traffic and delays at the roundabouts at I-17 and Happy Valley Road while I-17 is closed. Consider using an alternate route.
Reminder: Overnight lane restrictions on I-17 are scheduled to continue this week. Northbound I-17 is restricted to two lanes between Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads and southbound I-17 is restricted to two lanes between Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the morning of Friday, June 28. ADOT reminds drivers to slow down and merge safely into the open travel lanes.
The work is part of the I-17 traffic interchange reconstruction project at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads. The new bridges at Happy Valley Road will carry traffic over I-17 on the Diverging Diamond Interchange ADOT is constructing to improve safety and traffic flow. Learn more on the project webpage
