Expect lane restrictions on I-17 and long-term HOV lane closures in north Phoenix

Expect lane restrictions on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix beginning March 12 and long-term HOV lane closures

 Drivers who use Interstate 17 in north Phoenix should plan for overnight lane restrictions between Jomax and Happy Valley roads and the long-term closure of two stretches of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in the area.

 The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to two right lanes between Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads from 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 13.
  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to two right lanes between Jomax and Pinnacle Peak roads from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday, March 14.
  • Beginning Tuesday night, the northbound I-17 HOV lane between Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads will be closed, and is scheduled to remain closed through fall 2020.
  • Beginning Wednesday night, the southbound I-17 HOV lane between Jomax and Pinnacle Peak roads will be closed and is scheduled to remain closed through fall 2020.

 The restrictions are necessary so crews who are reconstructing the I-17 traffic interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads can set up barrier to create a safe work zone.

 The interchange reconstruction project includes removing the roundabouts at I-17 and Happy Valley Road and building a diverging diamond interchange, and constructing a tight-diamond interchange at Pinnacle Peak Road. The new interchanges are designed to improve safety and traffic flow in this fast-growing area of the Valley.
