SR 260 delays possible Saturday due to ASU football scrimmage

Big crowd expected at Camp Tontozona east of Payson

PHOENIX – Motorists planning to use State Route 260 east of Payson on Saturday, Aug. 5, should allow extra travel time due to the large crowd expected to attend Arizona State University’s annual Camp Tontozona football scrimmage.

The eastbound lanes between Kohl’s Ranch and Christopher Creek (mileposts 267-272), about 15 miles east of Payson, will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Sunday to allow parking along the eastbound portion of the highway.

Eastbound motorists not stopping at Camp Tontozona will be directed to use a lane on the westbound side of the highway.

Those attending the scrimmage should obey the speed limit and follow signs and message boards to the designated parking area.

More information on attending the scrimmage as well as this week’s Camp Tontozona practices is available at thesundevils.com.

Those traveling from the Phoenix metro area to attend the scrimmage should be aware of the traffic restrictions on State Route 87 near Slate Creek, 25 miles south of Payson. The highway is narrowed to one lane for a few miles in each direction while crews conduct roadway repairs and stabilize the terrain around it. Drivers can expect long delays and should consider alternate routes between Payson and the Valley.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur.
