The
first phase of a project to improve safety and traffic flow on the San Carlos
Apache Reservation will require a full closure of BIA 6 at US 70 beginning
Wednesday, April 5, and continuing approximately four weeks. A 25-mile
detour will be in place while the intersection is closed 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, through early May.
Drivers
should use US 70 east to BIA 170, and then north approximately four miles to
reconnect with westbound BIA 6 (see detour map below).
The Arizona Department of
Transportation, in cooperation with the San Carlos Apache Tribe and Federal
Highway Administration, is constructing a right‐turn lane for westbound US 70
to northbound BIA 6 and an acceleration lane for traffic entering westbound US
70 from southbound BIA 6; installing a drainage culvert; milling and replacing
pavement on US 70 and BIA 6; replacing the existing cattle guard across BIA 6;
removing and replacing the existing guardrail and fencing; and other
improvement work.
Phase
one work includes installation of a drainage culvert and replacement of the
cattle guard, and is scheduled for completion on May 4. As always,
schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors.
