Travel plans near Buckeye? Allow extra time this weekend as pavement-improvement work rolls on

Westbound Interstate 10 near Buckeye will be restricted this weekend as a pavement-improvement project continues. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends allowing extra travel time and planning for heavy traffic while the following restrictions and closures are in place:

  • Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, between Miller Road and State Route 85. The westbound I-10 on-ramp at Miller Road also will be closed. Alternate routes include westbound Broadway Road or Southern Avenue to northbound SR 85 to the I-10 connecting ramp. On-ramp detour: Use southbound Miller Road to Broadway Road, then westbound Broadway Road to northbound SR 85 to the I-10 connecting ramp.

  • Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane in four-mile increments between Verrado Way and SR 85 from 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, to 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Alternate routes include westbound Yuma or Broadway roads or Southern Avenue to northbound SR 85 to the 1-10 connecting ramp.

Drivers will again use a zipper merge in the work zone during daytime hours on Saturday, Oct. 22. The technique calls for drivers to resist the urge to merge early. Instead, drivers remain in both travel lanes until they see signs advising them that it's time to merge, and then take turns.

The rubberized-asphalt paving portion of this project is scheduled for completion on October 30. As always, construction schedules can change because of weather or other unforeseen factors. Final striping of the newly paved roadway is scheduled for early 2017. ADOT completed a similar project in the Buckeye area on eastbound I-10 in 2015. Learn more about the project and the many benefits of rubberized asphalt here.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but it’s possible that unscheduled closures or restrictions might occur because of weather or other factors.
