Gila Bend traffic will be redirected to new roads beginning Monday

Motorists traveling from Phoenix to San Diego should allow extra travel time through Gila Bend

As the Arizona Department of Transportation continues working on improvements at the intersection of State Route 85 (Pima Street) and B-8 (Butterfield Road) in Gila Bend, crews will begin redirecting motorists onto newly constructed roads Monday (Oct. 3) and Tuesday (Oct. 4).

Motorists traveling from Phoenix to San Diego should allow extra travel time as delays of up to 20 minutes are possible on these two days. Traffic will begin using the newly paved roads on Wednesday (Oct. 5).

What to expect Monday and Tuesday:

  • Workers will intermittently stop traffic near the State Route 85/ B-8 intersection as traffic is re-routed onto the new paved roads.
  • The traffic changes will be executed in phases between Monday and Tuesday.
  • Delays expected to take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
  • Message boards and signs will advise drivers of lane restrictions.
  • Law enforcement will be on-site to help monitor speeds and control traffic.

The new intersection is part of a $13.2 million safety and enhancement project that will create a safer, elevated intersection at SR 85 and Butterfield Road. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2012.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
