Freeway-improvement work continues on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) in the East Valley, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers can expect the following restrictions this weekend and next week:
- Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed at McDowell Road from 11 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (May 31). Northbound Loop 101 HOV lane also closed between McKellips and McDowell roads. DETOUR: Southbound Loop 101 traffic will detour along the off- and on-ramps at McDowell Road. Please be advised: Northbound and southbound Loop 101 ramps to Loop 202 eastbound (Red Mountain Freeway) in Mesa area closed from 6 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday (May 31) for paving work as part of freeway-widening project. DETOUR: Northbound Loop 101 drivers can travel east on University Drive or Rio Salado Parkway and north on Dobson Road to reach Loop 202. Southbound Loop 101 drivers can travel east on Thomas or McDowell roads, south on Dobson Road and east on McKellips Road to reach Loop 202.
- 90th closed in both directions under the Loop 101 freeway for bridge work from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday (May 30). DETOUR: Consider using Shea Boulevard as an alternate route.
- Loop 101 on and off-ramps at McDowell Road closed for 60 days beginning Monday (June 1). DETOUR: Use Thomas or McKellips roads for Loop 101 access.
The Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) improvement project is adding one new lane in each direction, along with merge lanes between most interchanges, between Shea Boulevard and Loop 202. The entire project is scheduled for completion in fall 2016.
