Fort Smith Police Department Mourns the Passing of George Lawson

Fort Smith, AR - The Fort Smith Police Department joins the law enforcement community in mourning the passing of George Lawson, whose career of public service included more than 36 years with FSPD before he later served as Chief of Police for the Muldrow Police Department.

Lawson began his career with the Fort Smith Police Department on May 30, 1977. He retired on Dec. 31, 2013, after 36 years and seven months of service to the department and the Fort Smith community.

Throughout his career, Lawson earned the respect of those who served beside him through his leadership, professionalism and commitment to public safety. He was a mentor, colleague and friend whose influence extended well beyond his years in uniform, and earned him the name "Big G" among his law enforcement family.

His service did not end with his retirement from Fort Smith. Lawson continued his law enforcement career as Chief of Police in Muldrow, where he carried forward the same dedication to service and leadership that defined his time with FSPD.

“George dedicated his life to serving others,” said Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker. “He spent more than three decades protecting the Fort Smith community and later continued that commitment as Chief of Police in Muldrow. He led with integrity, mentored countless officers and left a lasting impact on the people and departments he served. We are grateful for his friendship, his service and his example. Our prayers are with his family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The Fort Smith Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Chief Lawson’sfamily, friends, former colleagues and the Muldrow community during this difficult time.
