COMMUNITY NOTICE 

Fort Smith Police Officer sustains life-threatening injuries in early morning shooting

Fort Smith, AR - An officer-involved shooting occurred at approximately 1:26 AM on May 17, 2026, in the area of 7200 Massard Road in Fort Smith.

During the incident, an FSPD Officer was struck by at least one bullet fired by a suspect. The Officer is being transported to a hospital outside of the area with life-threatening injuries. The suspect was shot and killed after a pursuit that ended near the Grand Avenue exit on I-540 northbound. 

At the request of Fort Smith Chief of Police Danny Baker, the Arkansas State Police is handling the investigation. I-540 Northbound near the Grand Avenue exit will be closed indefinitely as ASP's investigation proceeds. Additionally, McClure Drive will be shut down indefinitely as Officers investigate the initial scene where the Officer was shot. Additional information will be released when available and appropriate.
