COMMUNITY ALERT
Fort Smith Police Department Forms Violent Crimes Task Force
Fort Smith, AR - On July 29, 2025, the Fort Smith Police Department established a Violent Crimes Task Force in response to recent incidents of gunfire, including multiple drive-by shootings that have resulted in property damage and the loss of one life. These events are unacceptable acts of violence that threaten the safety and peace of our community.
Despite the fact that violent crime in Fort Smith has been on a steady decline over the past three years, a small number of individuals have caused a recent spike, and the department is taking decisive steps to ensure that trend does not reverse.
“We will not allow a handful of criminals to terrorize our community,” Chief of Police Danny Baker said. “The Violent Crimes Task Force has been created to address these incidents head-on, and the men and women of the Fort Smith Police Department remain committed to protecting our residents and keeping crime down.”
This temporary Task Force brings together specialized officers and resources to target violent offenders, strengthen community partnerships, and provide timely updates to the public as progress is made. Progress will be closely monitored for its continued need and effectiveness.
The Fort Smith Police Department asks that anyone with information related to recent shootings or suspicious activity contact us directly at 479-709-5000. To be reward-eligible (up to $1,000), tips must be submitted through Fort Smith CrimeStoppers at 78-CRIME.
