FSPD's Comprehensive Tornado Siren Test Uncovers Five of 31 Malfunctioning: Next Steps
Fort Smith, AR - The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) conducted a comprehensive test of the city's tornado siren system on April 17, 2024, engaging thirty-one personnel to ensure the operational integrity of all 31 sirens across Fort Smith.
During this extensive testing, Officers identified five sirens with functional issues, varying from inaudible alerts to complete non-functionality. Specifically, the siren at Riley Farms was remedied on-site after clearing a carbon build-up.
Motorola, which handles technical maintenance and safety assurances of the siren systems, then performed both manual and wireless signal tests. These tests successfully triggered the remaining sirens' operations, suggesting external factors may have temporarily hindered performance. However, concerns remain with sirens located at Bailey Hill, S. 44th St / Rogers Avenue, I-540 / Cliff Drive, and Xavier St / Wheeler Avenue.
To further secure the reliability of the tornado siren system, the FSPD will be conducting permanent weekly tests, set to commence on April 24. These will be conducted from the FSPD Communications Center, Training Center, and Arkansas State Police-Troop H. FSPD Officers will be assigned to monitor the sirens that previously malfunctioned, ensuring comprehensive oversight and immediate response to any discrepancies.
This proactive strategy is integral to our mission to safeguard Fort Smith residents, ensuring that the sirens perform effectively in critical times. If there are any remaining concerns about a tornado siren in your area, please notify us at 479-709-5000.
