FSPD, SCSO Launch 'Operation Nab-a-Grinch' to Proactively Target Package Theft, Vehicle B&Es
FORT SMITH, AR - This Holiday Season, the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) and Sebastian County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) are teaming up to save Christmas for all the Whos in the River Valley with Operation Nab-a-Grinch. This special task force of officers and deputies will combat the rising threat of porch piracy and vehicle break-ins within our area from now until Christmas is safe.
With the holiday season fast approaching and an increase in package deliveries anticipated, as well as packages being left in automobiles at brick-and-mortar locations, we are intensifying efforts to prevent and prosecute such crimes.
While we cannot disclose specific tactics for operational purposes, we encourage residents to take the following proactive steps to help stop these criminals in their tracks:
1. IMMEDIATELY CALL THE POLICE to Report Theft, Attempted Theft, or Suspicious Activities: The Police Department should be your first contact. If you have cameras and catch someone stealing packages, make sure that we have that information before posting it to social media. By the time a report is filed, a package thief has long left the area. Instead, call 911 or 479-709-5100 so we can respond at once.
2. Schedule Deliveries: Whenever possible, choose delivery options that allow you to schedule delivery times when you'll be at home to receive packages.
3. Use Secure Drop-off Locations: Consider using secure drop-off locations, such as lockboxes or designated package lockers, to ensure the safe delivery of your packages.
4. Request Signature Confirmation: Request that packages require a signature upon delivery, ensuring they are placed directly into your hands.
5. Monitor Deliveries: Keep an eye on tracking information and delivery notifications. If possible, have a trusted neighbor or friend retrieve packages if you can't be present.
6. Install Surveillance Cameras: Consider installing security cameras that cover your porch area, which can serve as a deterrent and provide evidence if theft occurs.
7. Report Suspicious Activity: If you observe any suspicious individuals or vehicles in your neighborhood, please report them to the Fort Smith Police Department immediately.
8. Lock Up and Secure Belongings: Avoid leaving packages and other valuables in your vehicle, and lock your doors before leaving an automobile unattended. Also, whenever possible, park in locations that are well-lit and in view of video surveillance.
In addition to committing a Class D felony punishable by fines and up to six years in prison, Grinches caught stealing packages will have their names permanently featured on the department's social media pages for all the Whos in Whoville to see.
Again, that's permanently.
So,
Even little Cindy-Lou Who,
no more than two,
in years 2 or 22,
will know it was you.
Boo-hoo-hoo...
The FSPD and SCSO are dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure community for all residents. By working with us, everyone can make a significant impact in deterring porch piracy and vehicle break-ins. For any information related to porch piracy or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Fort Smith Police Department by dialing 911 or 479-709-5100.
