State and Federal Snapper Season

Alabama’s recreational red snapper runs now through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017. Alabama state waters extend 9 nautical miles from shore. The daily bag limit is two red snapper per person, and the minimum size is 16 inches in total length. 

2017 federal red snapper season opens June 1 and lasts for three days.

The law requires each vessel to report their catch via Snapper Check.


State Parks Working on Repairs, Improvements 

Thanks to Amendment 2 Passage

In north Alabama, Cheaha State Park, DeSoto State Park and Monte Sano State Park are well on the way toward completing delayed projects. Two rustic cabins at DeSoto are undergoing renovations that soon should be completed. At Monte Sano, some structures now have new roofs. Cheaha’s swimming pool is being renovated and converted into a salt-water pool. More


Alabama's 2017 Academic Archers 

Based on the results of the 2017 NASP National Tournament and using rosters of all 19,831 registered Academic Archers, NASP has announced its second All-American Academic Teams in Elementary, Middle School, and High School Divisions for 2017.

This year’s All-American Academic Teams includes four of Alabama’s best NASP archers.

  • Kase Nixon from East Elementary in Cullman, Ala.
  • Jesse Moore from Gulf Coast Archery, in Foley, Ala.
  • James Ladd from Prattville High School, in Prattville, Ala.
  • Robert Morgan from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, Ala.

Alligator Hunt Registration Opens June 2

Online registration for the state’s annual regulated alligator hunts will open June 2 at 8 a.m. Registration must be completed by 8 a.m. July 11. A total of 260 Alligator Possession Tags will be distributed among four hunting zones. The administrative fee to apply for an Alligator Possession Tag is $22 and individuals may register one time per zone. While the tag is free, the selected hunters and their assistants are required to have valid hunting licenses in their possession while hunting.

Free Fishing Day is

June 10

Alabamians and visitors alike will have the opportunity to fish for free in most public waters including both freshwater and saltwater on June 10. Free Fishing Day is part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs June 3-11.

BioBlitz Discovery

In the course of approximately 30 hours, over 250 species of plants and animals were observed at the Yates Lake Forever Wild Complex in Elmore County on May 19-20. The information gathered will be used to make land management decisions and will aid biologists in their research.
