By-Pass Road Built - ADOT&PF Re-Opens Kalifornsky Beach Road Following Washout

 

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) today announced that Kalifornsky Beach Road in Kenai has been re-opened to traffic at milepost 11 following last week’s flood-related washout.    

Receding floodwaters allowed DOT&PF work crews to begin constructing the by-pass around the washout area on Friday, September 21^st. DOT&PF worked through the weekend to complete the by-pass and re-establish through-traffic on the loop road. The by-pass was built as a gravel-surfaced road with dual lanes for unrestricted use by all legal traffic.  Interim pilot cars operations will be in effect during an initial re-opening period while crews continue work to perfect the temporary by-pass.

This by-pass route will remain in use until such time as permanent repairs are made to the original alignment.  DOT&PF is preparing to bid the permanent repairs with a contract completion date of November 15^th.
