Increase in Heroin-related and Fentanyl-positive Overdose Cases in Alaska - Resources available
When Alaskans use heroin and other non-prescribed opiates, they are at risk of overdose death due to substance misuse, co-occurring use and the potential that the drug they are using may be cut with unknown compounds or compounds much stronger than they are used to. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80-100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. Fentanyl is increasingly being detected in Alaska and the potency can cause severe health complications including death.
Fentanyl Test strips are used to test whether a drug contains fentanyl prior to using it. Naloxone (also known as Narcan) binds to opioid receptors and blocks the effects of opioids, which can stop overdose deaths after use. These items and more are available for anyone to have from the Office of Substance Misuse and Addiction Prevention's Project HOPE program as well as the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

Building Bridges Program Aims to Reduce Suicide Attempts in Fairbanks

Alaskans ages 25 and older who live in this region have some of the highest suicide mortality and attempt rates in the nation.
The program aims to build systems and bridge service gaps, integrating critical components of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, and the Tribal Behavioral Health Agenda in alignment with AI/AN culture.
