Notification – Federal Agencies

On May 18, 2021, the State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) issued a press release which identified the dhss.alaska.gov website as the target of a malware attack. DHSS is working with an outside contractor and law enforcement to evaluate the scope of this attack. That evaluation is on-going. We wanted to assure you as our federal partner that we have taken every recommended action to continue operations, protect our systems, and avoid the possibility of further disruption, including taking our department website offline while this incident is being investigated.

As is required, the state will keep its federal partners apprised of all developments as this investigation continues, including but not limited to, providing notice of any impact on Reporting Capabilities and whether our ability to report on the program by the required deadline will be delayed.

At this time, we are waiting for reports from our forensic review to determine whether any personal or confidential information was compromised. The department will continue to provide updates to the public as details are confirmed and will notify any federal partners, providers, vendors, or individuals who may be identified as being directly affected by the attack.

The department is working as quickly as possible to ensure continuity of services to beneficiaries and providers while ensuring reporting obligations are met. DHSS is making every effort to provide alternate means of conducting business while the usual platforms are unavailable.

As you note from the press release, in addition to our website being brought down, certain systems have been taken offline. DHSS released a contact information for the public, federal partners and providers, and will continue its outreach as the situation evolves.
