COVID-19 VACCINES are coming soon, make plans for your crews!
It has been published recently that two pharmaceutical companies, Pfizer/ BIONTECH and Moderna, are close to applying to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to begin distribution of the COVID-19 Vaccines.
The Federal Government has indicated for states to expect arrival of vaccines shortly after thorough testing and safety measures has been approved by the FDA, sometime in early December. Once approved, we can expect shipments to start arriving in Alaska through, “Operations Warp Speed.” Vaccines are to be distributed in three phases, Phase 1a is planned to be for healthcare workers to- include first responders. Phase 2 is planned as supply increases for critical populations and Phase 3 is planned for the general population, sometime around the summer of 2021.
Distribution to healthcare workers will be either through local community health centers, pharmacies or hospitals. It is imperative for the leadership of EMS, Fire and other prehospital provider agencies to make contact with local partners to review and or make plans for participating within their vaccine Point of Dispensing (POD).
If you have any questions regarding planning for COVID Vaccines for your crew, please contact the EMS Technical Assistant Advisor for COVID Vaccines at Terry.Kadel@alaska.gov or 907-269-4659.
