Federal CARES Act Funds Available to Support Organizations Impacted by COVID-19

August 20, 2020

To our community partners:

COVID-19 has impacted all Alaskans. We know that many organizations that serve Trust beneficiaries have experienced challenges due to the pandemic including lost revenues, event cancellations, increased supply and PPE cost, and facility constraints due to social distancing requirements.

We want to make you aware of two opportunities for which you may be eligible to apply for federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding to help provide economic relief. CARES Act funds have been set aside for grants to nonprofits and small businesses, and we encourage eligible beneficiary serving entities to apply.

Coronavirus Nonprofit Relief Fund

The State of Alaska has set aside $35 million in CARES Act funding to specifically support nonprofits in Alaska adversely affected by COVID-19.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) has partnered with The Alaska Community Foundation to establish the Coronavirus Nonprofit Relief Fund with the set-aside funding. Eligible organizations are encouraged to apply to the Alaska Community Foundation for a grant. In addition to nonprofits, Tribal organizations, faith based organizations providing social services, and local governments can also apply. Visit the site linked below to see the full list of eligible entities.

According to the Alaska Community Foundation, grant awards through this program will range from $25,000 to $1,000,000. Eligible expense categories include medical, public health, payroll, expenses of actions to facilitate compliance, expenses associated with the provision of economic support, and other expenses reasonably necessary ties to COVID-19.

One round of funding totaling $18.5M has already been announced, and there are two more rounds of grant review. The Community Foundation estimates it will have $10M to distribute in Round 2, with remaining funds distributed in Round 3.

Applications are due at 5pm on the following days:

Round 2: August 26, 2020

Round 3: October 14, 2020

You can learn more about grant criteria and the application process here: Grant and the application process  If you have questions about eligibility, you contact the Alaska Community Foundation or the Trust.

AK CARES Grant Program

Some of our beneficiary serving partners may also be eligible for the AK CARES Grant Program. The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED), working with the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA), established a grant program to provide economic relief to small Alaskan businesses impacted by COVID-19.

Small businesses based, licensed, and located in Alaska with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) – including C-corps, S-corps, Partnerships, LLCs, Nonprofits (501(c)3 501(c)6, and 501(c)19 organizations) and sole proprietorships – impacted by COVID-19 can apply if they meet the eligibility criteria. Grant amounts will range between $5,000 - $100,000 based on expenses.

2020 Census -

Help Make Sure all Beneficiaries are Counted

Have you completed your Census questionnaire? The 2020 Census will determine funding for local services and economic opportunities for the next 10 years. All Alaskans, including Trust beneficiaries, are impacted by federal investments in our state, so it is essential that we get a complete count of state residents to maximize the federal resources that support so many beneficiary serving programs. Counting every Alaskan is critical to ensure full federal funding for healthcare and hospitals, schools and public safety, and more.

You can respond to the Census online. Visit my2020census.gov or call 1-844-330-2020
