Two new cases of COVID-19 reported in two Alaska communities; two nonresident cases in seafood industry workers in Anchorage

May 26, 2020 ANCHORAGE — The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced two new cases of COVID-19 in Anchorage (1) and Sitka (1). This brings the total Alaska case count to 411.

This report reflects data from 12:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on May 25 that posted at noon today on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

The Sitka Unified Command announced on Monday the Sitka case was a patient who was tested as part of Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center’s admitting process. The person was isolated immediately and the case is being investigated to determine the source of the virus. This is the second case in Sitka.

Of the new Alaska cases, both are female. One is aged 20-29 and one is aged 30-39. There have been a total of 45 hospitalizations and 10 deaths with no new hospitalizations or deaths reported yesterday. Recovered cases now total 362, with one new recovered cases recorded yesterday. A total of 44,964 tests have been conducted.

Two nonresident cases in Anchorage were identified in seafood industry workers. They are listed separately from the total Alaska case count since they are not residents of Alaska. This brings the total nonresident cases to 17, 12 of which are in the seafood industry. Public health nurses and the DHSS Section of Epidemiology are investigating all cases in conjunction with the seafood company and community partners.
