Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development Concludes June Quarterly Meeting
ANCHORAGE, AK – The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development met June 3 & 4, 2026, for its quarterly meeting, which included professional development, public testimony, and action on several educational programs and appointments.
The Board held professional development meetings on June 3. Meetings focused on Reading by Third Grade, Career & Technical Education and Culturally Relevant Education, Closing the Achievement Gap, Educator Workforce, and Safety and Wellbeing.
Additionally, members received presentations on Teacher Turnover, Traumatic Brain Injury legislation, and updates from the Professional Teaching Practices Commission.
On the second day, the Board heard public comment and conducted the Board Member Oath of Office for Member Joy Cogburn-Smith, who was appointed by Governor Mike Dunleavy to the Second Judicial seat.
The Board received updates from the University of Alaska Southeast on the Master of Arts in Teaching Indigenous Languages (MAT IL) Program, the Mt. Edgecumbe High School Ad Hoc Committee, the Mt. Edgecumbe High School Advisory Board, multiple DEED divisions, and the Commissioner’s End of the Year Report. The Board reviewed the SMART Goals for the State Board Strategic Plan and the Mt. Edgecumbe High School budget.
In the business meeting, the Board approved the following motions:
- University of Alaska Southeast Master of Arts in Teaching Indigenous Languages Program
- Edgecumbe High School Advisory Board Members
- The Career & Technical Education Committee Awards Recognition Program
- Public Comment period for SBOE Strategic Plan SMART Goals
The Board’s next meeting is scheduled for October.
