Joel Isaak Named DEED Deputy Commissioner
JUNEAU, AK – The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) is pleased to announce Joel Isaak as the new Deputy Commissioner of DEED. Mr. Isaak's appointment is effective immediately.
Mr. Isaak most recently served DEED as the Director of Tribal Affairs. In that role, he has been integral in the creation and implementation of the State-Tribal Education Compacting.
He also works as a linguist for the Kenaitze Indian Tribe in Kenai and teaches Dena'ina at Kenai Peninsula College in Soldotna.
Mr. Isaak has his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Alfred University in New York, and is currently earning his PhD in Indigenous Studies from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
“I am excited for Joel to step into the role of Deputy Commissioner. He is a smart, innovative Alaska leader who will add value to our state in improving student outcomes and transforming education in Alaska,” said DEED Commissioner Dr. Deena Bishop.
Mr. Isaak is a dedicated educator, culture bearer, language keeper, artist, and lifelong learner, and DEED is honored to have him as a team member in the Commissioner's Office.
