New Farebox Coming to Your Bus!

AC Transit e-News

Starting this weekend, bus lines serving the northern cities in the service area (Berkeley to San Pablo) will have brand new fareboxes! A pilot test on ten buses in December went very well, so the rollout to the whole fleet got underway in early January. After 14 years, the old fareboxes have come to the end of their useful life and are being replaced with state-of-the-art GFI Fast Fare equipment. The new boxes are so new, in fact, that AC Transit is the first bus agency in the country to install them fleetwide!

The new farebox has all the features of the old one, plus a few more. The arrangement of slots is a little different, so take a good look before you insert your bills, coins, and transfers. Here's a short video that shows how it all works. It's important to note that this farebox is smarter than the old one--it will only accept valid U.S. currency and coins. Anything other than that will be rejected. If you use BART transfers, ferry transfers, Capitol Corridor transfers, or the orange 25-cent transfer tickets, these need to be handed to the bus operator--not deposited into the farebox.

And in case you're wondering: There are no changes to paying with Clipper. Tag your Clipper card on the separate Clipper card reader, just like you always have.

Hope you like the new farebox! And thanks for riding AC Transit.
