IAC: How long did it take you to apply for the IAP grant?

DelReverda-Jennings: Having researched and previously written about several hundred artists in the last seventeen years, the concept had been a long-held desire in the making. I had time to think beforehand and sort out many of the variables before deciding to apply for an IAC FY12 IAP grant in the literary discipline. Additionally, the ease, accommodation and variety of today's growing self-publishing industry, utilization of print-on-demand services and digital cameras have made the whole process of bringing a book to publication much easier.

I went online to view the application before working on it and began completing my proposal in increments of several hours at a time over a period of about a week. Actual hours to complete the application took perhaps 21 in total. I focused on my proposed project envisioning each step as how to best implement it from the beginning to the final report. I addressed each question on the application, located old publication files, re-read each and then proceeded to lay-out everything. After a number of grammatical and budget checks, narrative revisions, listening to feedback from colleagues, editing and reading over everything several more times, I finally submitted my information online, which by the way was really wonderful! No more paper-clipped, multiple copies to deliver. Love the convenience!

Individual Artist Program Deadline & Grant Workshops

Hoosier artists in selected disciplines have until February 7, 2013 to submit applications for our Individual Artist Program (IAP) grant.

Eligible projects will only be considered in the areas of: dance, theatre, literature, music and folk arts related to the traditional disciplines listed here. Artists with disabilities are encouraged to apply for projects related to the eligible disciplines.

The IAC will also be conducting a series of workshops for artists to assist them in learning more about the grant program and application process.  A listing of the remaining workshops, locations and times is posted on the IAC website and can be found at http://www.in.gov/arts/2659.htm.

Arts United Announces $300,000 Gift from the AEP Foundation for the Construction of ArtsLab

The American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation has granted Arts United in Fort Wayne a significant gift of $300,000 for the construction of the next phase of development on the growing downtown arts campus, ArtsLab.  More commonly known as a black box theater, ArtsLab is specially designed for small theatrical productions, music, dance, temporary art exhibits, educational programming, and more.

"The AEP Foundation is making a strategic investment in northeast Indiana by this gift to Arts United," said Sarah Bodner, director of communications and community relations for Indiana Michigan Power.  "The expansion of the downtown arts campus adds to the vibrancy of our community, helps attract and retain talent, and encourages business investment in our region."

With its flexible seating and technology grid, ArtsLab will provide the versatile space that artists need to share new and innovative creative activity, and no other black box theater currently exists in downtown Fort Wayne. Arts United in partnership with the artistic leaders of the Fort Wayne Ballet, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Youtheatre, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, met with consultants Steve Friedlander and Tom Tomlinson to discuss technical and design elements of the space.

"We are thrilled by this very generous gift to our community from the AEP Foundation," said Jim Sparrow, executive director of Arts United.  "The arts campus - made possible through donations to the A Home for the Arts capital campaign- is a tangible, visible expression of the value our arts and cultural assets play in developing our vibrant downtown neighborhood."

NEA Announces Application Guidelines for Creative Writing Fellowships

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is pleased to announce that application guidelines are now available for the FY2014 Creative Writing Fellowships in Prose. Creative Writing Fellowships encourage the production of new work and allow writers the time and means to write.  The program offers $25,000 grants to published creative writers. Please note that these grants are highly competitive.  In FY2013, the NEA awarded 40 grants out of 1,137 eligible applications.  You can find out more about recent fellowship recipients in the NEA's Writer's Corner, which includes bios and excerpts of work by the winners. Applications are evaluated through a process of anonymous manuscript review under the sole criteria of artistic excellence and merit. Panelists do not know the identities of the writers, their publishing histories, academic achievements or previous awards. The NEA Literature Fellowships program operates on a two-year cycle with fellowships in prose and poetry available in alternating years. For FY2014, which is covered by these guidelines, fellowships in prose are available. Fellowships in poetry will be offered in FY2015 and guidelines will be available in the fall of 2013. You may apply only once each year. The deadline for application submission is February 28, 2013. SNAAP to Host 3 Million Stories Conference in March

The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) a project of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research is pleased to invite you to a three-day national conference on arts education and the creative workforce. "3 Million Stories: Understanding the Lives and Careers of America's Arts Graduates" will bring together some of our nation's best informed and most thoughtful scholars, educators, arts graduates, and artists to discuss the state and future direction of creative training in the United States. Among the panel topics are "The Ups and Downs of the Creative Economy," "Inequality in Artistic Training and Careers," and "How Far Can You Stretch a Tube of Paint?: The Arts Degree for Non-Artists." In a featured guest presentation, comedian Lewis Black will be interviewed by writer Willie Reale. The workshop will take place at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee March 7 - 9, 2013.  The cost of attendance is $185 which includes four meals. Inexpensive Studio Space Available, Noble County Convention & Visitors Bureau (Kendallville, IN)
Noble County Convention & Visitors Bureau is spreading the word about an opportunity to create a Sylvan Springs Artisan Farm on Sylvan Lake.  The farm is strategically located just 20 minutes south of the Toll Road, just off the shore of Sylvan Lake, and along State Road 9 in Noble County.  The location is also only about 2 miles from the Gene Stratton Porter State Historic Site that sees over 30,000 visitors annually. Call for Entries, Flood Gallery and Fine Arts Center at the Phil Mechanic Studios (Asheville, NC)
The Flood Gallery and Fine Arts Center at the Phil Mechanic Studios invites artists to submit entries to a national juried exhibition of contemporary art. The focus of this exhibition is on current socio-political relations in, or associated with, the United States. Accepted works will be on display between Friday, January 18 and Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Flood Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina.  Diana Stoll, Senior Editor of Aperture magazine will be present and open the exhibition with a brief introduction to the works chosen on Friday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m. with the opening reception immediately following.  Open to all artists living in the United States who are 18 years of age or older. All work must be original and completed within the last 5 years and cannot have been exhibited at the Flood Gallery previously.  The Juror may choose single or multiple works from an artist's submission(s) at her discretion.  All mediums are accepted providing that the work will not perish or otherwise decompose during the exhibit. A full-color catalog will be printed.  All artists accepted to the exhibition will receive a complimentary exhibition catalog. Awards total $500 in cash prizes awarded by the juror.  Applicants may submit up to 3 works for the initial $30 entrance fee.  There will be a $10 charge for each additional piece entered. Call for Entries, Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program (Macomb, IL)
The Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program of the Capital Development Board is pleased to announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to Illinois artists to create permanent, site-specific, original public artwork for the Performing Arts Center at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.  The art will be installed in a terrazzo floor that runs through the main axis of the structure.  The budget of approximately $200,000 will cover a fee to the artist to design and oversee the installation of the floor as well as the terrazzo installation.  The complete list of RFQs with project details and budgets can be seen at  http://www2.illinois.gov/cdb/services/art/Pages/CommissionOpportunities.aspx (project number 818-010-096).  Project deadline is Friday, December 14, 2012 at 4:30 p.m.

Call for Entries, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (Indianapolis, IN)
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are now accepting submissions. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation's longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for teenage student achievement in the visual and literary arts. Creative teens in grades 7-12 can submit works in 28 categories of art and writing, including sculpture, printmaking, fashion, photography, video games, journalism, memoir, poetry and short story. Winners of the Central and Southern Indiana Scholastic competition will have their work exhibited at Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis.  Gold Key winners advance to a national competition, with the chance to win scholarships and be part of a national exhibition that tours the country.  Submissions will be accepted until Friday, January 4, 2013 with a discounted fee for those who enter by Friday, December 15, 2012.  For more information visit www.artandwriting.org.  Selected award winners will be invited to exhibit their work in the Artsgarden in September 2013. Call for Entries, Heartbeat of the Heartland 2013 Intern Show, Indiana University Kokomo (Kokomo, IN)
The Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery is located on the IU Kokomo campus.  The gallery displays artwork by local, regional, national, and international artists throughout the year. This year they will be drawing attention to artists from all over the state of Indiana for their 2013 Intern Exhibition curated by gallery intern Biz Bates.  The exhibit is open to all artists who are at least 16 years of age and live within the borders of Indiana.  All fine art media are accepted including: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass, prints, photography, collage, graphics, pastels, video, and mixed media.  All entries must be an original piece, created in the last 3 years, and produced in Indiana.  The artwork must be no larger than 48" in width and measure horizontally.  Sculptures should not exceed 11 ft. in height due to gallery space.  All work must be accurately represented in jpeg images.  Work not meeting these criteria will not be exhibited.  Professional presentation of each piece is required.  All entries must be signed, labeled and exhibit ready.  2D Artwork should be framed and have a secure way to hang the piece if it requires hanging.  For unframed canvases, the sides of the canvas must be covered.  Sculptures should be fully assembled and structurally sound and include detailed installation instructions.   All entries can either be emailed to gallery2@iuk.edu with the subject line "Heartland" or sent on CD to: Indiana University Kokomo, Art Gallery: Heartland, 2300 S. Call for Artists, Office of Cultural Affairs, City of Dallas (Dallas, TX)

Call for Artists, City of Tacoma Sound Transit Public Art Program (Tacoma, WA)
The City of Tacoma invites artists and/or artist teams living in the United States to respond to a Request for Qualifications for a $185,000 Sound Transit Public Art Program (STart) commission by midnight, Pacific Standard Time on December 17, 2012.  The selected artist or artist team will create gateway artwork for the south entry to downtown Tacoma at Pacific Avenue and South 26th Street.  STart is collaborating with the City's Arts Program staff in managing this project.  This new entry is framed by the Pacific Bridge overpass and a landscaped berm that elevates the rail line.  Artwork welcoming people to downtown Tacoma is anticipated to be on either side of the berm areas flanking Pacific Avenue.  If the selected artist or artist team proposes additional sites for consideration, they would work with the Sound Transit to determine where the artwork would best be situated.  Budget is $185,000.  For a complete prospectus, go to tacomaculture.org/arts/opportunities.asp or soundtransit.org/start.

Call for Entries, Indianapolis International Film Festival (Indianapolis, IN)
The mission of the Indianapolis International Film Festival (the Indy Film Fest) is to create a shared experience around film by presenting movies that entertain, challenge and expand perspectives in Indianapolis and beyond. Since submission of a film constitutes acceptance of these Entry Rules & Regulations (by filmmakers and their agents), please review them carefully at http://indyfilmfest.org/submissions-support/2013-submissions/.  The Indy Film Fest screens films in competition in four categories: American Spectrum, Hoosier Lens, World Cinema and Matter of Fact. Films 49 minutes or less are considered short films; 50 minutes or longer are considered feature films.  Submissions are accepted only in one of the following categories:  American Spectrum, films defined as narrative films primarily produced in the United States, particularly those films without any strong ties to Indiana; Hoosier Lens, defined as narrative or documentary films with strong production ties to Indiana, which includes major cast or crew ties to the state (born, raised, attended school in state), and/or a significant portion of the film was and/or produced in Indiana (films can be submitted to American Spectrum OR Hoosier Lens, not both categories); World Cinema, defined as narrative films originating from any country outside of the United States; and Matter of Fact films, defined as documentary films, regardless of country of origin (documentaries with significant ties to Indiana may submit in the Hoosier Lens category if desired).  Juried festival awards are Best Feature and Short Film in all four categories and the Grand Jury Award (determined from the winners in each of the Best Of Feature categories).  Early bird deadline for submissions is December 31, 2012; regular deadline is February 28, 2013; and late deadline is March 31, 2013.  Visit the website for more information on eligibility and submission.

Call for Entries, New Albany Public Art Project - Bicentennial Series, Carnegie Center for Art & History (New Albany, IN)  The Carnegie Center for Art & History is seeking entries for the New Albany Public Art Project: Bicentennial Series.  Download the Call for Artists for information on the art sites and submission details at www.napublicart.org/forartists.php.  Each selected artist or artist team will receive an honorarium of $4,000.  Three artists or teams will be selected from the proposals to create outdoor artworks that will be installed in the Spring of 2013 to remain on view for two years.  Each selected artwork will interpret one of the following historic themes:  Clubs & Organizations, Culinary Arts, Museums & History, Performing Arts & Entertainment or Visual Arts & Artists.  Attention must be paid to this aspect of the project, as interpretation of the chosen theme and historical appropriateness will be a factor in the selection process.  While artists must interpret the theme in a way that is accurate to that history, we are not looking for literal displays of the theme, but rather unique and innovative interpretations of one or more aspects of the theme.  Full details and images relating to these themes can be found on the project website:  www.napublicart.org and additional images are on the project Facebook page: www.facebook.com/napublicart .   Entry deadline is January 3, 2013. 

Call for Proposals, Indy Island, Indianapolis Museum of Art (Indianapolis, IN)
The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) is issuing a call for proposals for a summer 2013 six-week residency on Andrea Zittel's Indy Island within the IMA's 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park.  Graduate and undergraduate students and professionals in the fields of art, design, architecture and performing arts are encouraged to apply to customize and reside on Indianapolis Island.  The chosen applicant will be awarded a stipend to customize the interior of the island and implement their proposal during a residency.  The Indy Island resident will have the opportunity to communicate their unique experience through the use of a blog provided by the IMA.  Learn more about Indy Island, or visit the page for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 residents. Graduate and undergraduate students and professionals in the fields of art, design, architecture and performing arts are encouraged to apply to customize and reside on Indy Island.  Residents will be responsible for the design, customization and fabrication of the interior of the island and all other components of the selected project. Indy Island is currently supplied with objects created by or brought to the island by the previous residents.  It will be the 2013 resident's choice to incorporate these materials into new proposals or to disregard these objects.  Collaboratives and groups are encouraged to apply.  Please fill out one application, regardless of the number of people in your group.  Residents are expected to communicate their experiences and conclusions to a larger audience through a blog provided by the IMA.  Residents may also choose to use other social networking platforms if applicable.  Indy Island generates a lot of interest with park visitors.  Residents should have an expectation of some interaction with visitors.  Island residents are provided with a budget of $3,000, paid in two installments, to purchase materials for fabrication.  All materials purchased with this budget are property of the IMA.  A personal stipend of $1,500 is also awarded.  The IMA will provide roundtrip travel to Indianapolis for one resident.  If a group application is chosen, these stipends will be divided among members of the group or the group can nominate an individual member to serve as a representative for the residency.  Residents will be loaned an iPad to use for blogging for the duration of the residency.  This commission is a large time commitment.  It would be ideal for students participating to earn credits at their university for their work, but this must be negotiated by the resident with his or her university.  Application deadline is Friday, January 11, 2013.  The dates of the residency are flexible and must last at least six weeks between May - September 2013.  Please submit all questions and applications to Amanda York at ayork@imamuseum.org.  For more information, please visit http://www.imamuseum.org/islandresidency.

Call for Artists, The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts (Honolulu, HI)
The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts will select two works of art for the Wahiawa Transit Center and is seeking proposals from artists or artist teams.  The budget for each project is $100,000.  The application deadline is January 11, 2013.  The Wahiawa Transit Center, at 956 California Avenue, is a two-story, 46,000 square foot structure with exterior historic-themed decorative elements. It functions as the main community bus station. The anticipated goal is for artworks that highlight the history and culture of Wahiawa with emphasis on the transportation history of the area.  The artworks are for the interior driveway walls. The West Project location is the west bus driveway and the East Project location is the east bus driveway.  The art work may use one or both walls of each driveway for works such as a mural, frieze, fresco, sculpture, or other wall-mounted works of art that are permanently installed. Call for Entries, Wings, Tails & Scales Art Exhibition, 2013 Midwest Veterinary Conference (Columbus, OH) All animal-loving artists are invited to submit work for the 9th Annual Wings, Tails and Scales art exhibition, a collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings and more - all celebrating animals. The fundraising exhibition is hosted in conjunction with the Midwest Veterinary Conference (MVC) on February 21-24, 2013, which draws more than 5,500 attendees from every aspect of the veterinary profession. In addition to a chance to win cash prizes, artists will help ensure a brighter future for animals across the U.S., as a portion of all proceeds from the show will benefit the Ohio Animal Health Foundation. Residents of all 50 states and Canada who are 16 years of age or older are eligible to enter original works of art. Works must portray animal subject matter. 2-D and 3-D pieces of any medium will be considered. Entered artwork and prices are not subject to change after the entry form has been submitted. All accepted pieces must be prepared for display and ready to sell as-is. Four entries per artist may be submitted for the non-refundable entry fee of $25. Artists may enter a maximum of twelve entries ($25 entry fee per every four submissions). Forms of payment accepted include checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover (checks should be made payable to OVMA). Digital images must be submitted as jpegs with minimal or no compression. Call for Artists, City of Coral Gables (Coral Gables, FL)
The City of Coral Gables Public Art is issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the creation of new permanent public civic art monument sculptures, which shall incorporate fountain features.  The artworks will be located within two recently completed traffic circles that serve as a major gateway to downtown Coral Gables, Florida with more than 22,000 visitors experiencing the art daily.  The total budget is $1,040,000 plus a $35,000 in kind value for horticultural services from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, which includes all costs such as, but not limited to, initial concept fees, travel, materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, installation and engineering.  This project has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).  Artists are encouraged to visit the site before submitting their application.  This commission is open internationally to all qualified artists.  A qualified artist is an individual or team generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional practitioner of the visual arts, as judged by the quality of that professional practitioner's body of work, MFA or equivalent, experience, past public commissions, exhibition record, publications, receipt of honors and awards, training in the arts, and production of artwork.  All qualified artists must have at least five (5) years of demonstrated professional art experience with regard to outdoor public art; must have experience with design and fabrication of fountains; and must have completed a project of at least $200,000 or greater.  All submissions must be of original completed work.  For more information, please visit http://www.coralgables.com/index.aspx?page=742 .  The submittal deadline is January 15, 2013.

Call for Artists, 17th Annual Ames Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, City of Ames (Ames, IA)
The Ames Public Art Commission and the Ames Main Street District invite your entries for the 17th Annual Ames Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (formerly Art Around the Corner).  Up to five sculptures will be selected and displayed in the City of Ames, Iowa from May 2013 to April 2014.  Each selection will merit a $1000 honorarium. The Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival will take place in Indianapolis' Mass Ave Arts & Theatre District August 15 to August 25, 2013 in 8 theatres.  Shows perform back-to-back in one-hour time slots, with 30 minutes between shows to allow performers to take down and set up and audiences to get from venue to venue.  Ticket prices for each show will be capped at $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for children under 12 years of age.  The Fringe operates 8 regular indoor venues which are assigned 8 companies/productions each.  Applications are selected on a 'first-come, first-served' basis.  Companies and/or individuals may submit only one application - multiple applications will result in the disqualification of all.  Companies in the Festival may not sell or transfer their spot to another company.  If we find that a company has sold or transferred their place to a second company, both companies will be removed from The Festival and will forfeit 100% of their application fees.  Once the application has been received, the company name and Primary Contact cannot be changed.  Deadline for applications is February 28, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.  For complete information, please visit http://indyfringe.org/indyfringe-2013-performer-application-form.

The Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. is seeking a full-time Assistant Technical Manager to work in event production and general operations of the facility.  The Assistant Technical Manager will report to the Technical Manager.  The Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which manages the City-owned Carolina Theatre complex including the 1,000-seat historic Fletcher Hall and two cinemas which screen independent films, as well as festivals and retrospectives, 365 days per year. The organization presents more than 50 Star Series performances per year in Fletcher Hall and provides more than 35 educational performances for more than 15,000 schoolchildren from 12 counties in the Arts Discovery series. Fletcher Hall is also home for a variety of performing arts resident companies and hosts a variety of non-profit and commercial events throughout the year.  Candidates must have strong working knowledge of production scheduling, lighting, sound, video, rigging, staging protocols, and have basic applicable computer skills.
