Dear Friends and Neighbors,

In the world of Spokane sports this week, the Mead and St. George High School girls’ basketball teams won state trophies in their divisions. I have invited both teams to Olympia to be my guests at the Capitol.

Congratulations also to the Whitworth and Gonzaga University basketball teams. Around Olympia this week I have heard many legislators recognize the accomplishments of the men’s and women’s teams at both schools, and I am incredibly proud of the outstanding players and coaches. As the teams represent our community on a national stage, I am confident they will continue to bring honor and pride to Spokane.

This Week in Olympia

This is the first week we will spend each day in the House chambers, voting on legislation we have heard in policy committees. As you know, I am the Ranking Republican on the Business and Financial Services committee and am responsible for briefing members on the bills which passed through the committee.  This committee handles legislation related to job creation in our state.

These are often long nights as we approach the halfway point of the legislative session, voting on legislation which affects your daily lives. I will continue to have your best interests in my mind when making these important decisions.

My Legislation

I wanted to update you on a piece of human trafficking legislation I have co-sponsored. House Bill 1291, which passed unanimously in the House, would direct fees stemming from an arrest for an offense related to human trafficking to fund victim rehabilitation and examine how best to end human trafficking in our state.

The bill also creates a committee on sex trafficking, tasked with analyzing the implementation of trafficking legislation passed in recent years as well as developing a plan of action as to what strategies we as legislators need to explore. I believe this will be a great way to make sure what we do in Olympia makes a difference in ending human trafficking in our state.

Looking Ahead

In the coming weeks, we will begin to hear budget proposals in Olympia. I wanted to leave you with some food for thought about where the Legislature chose to spend money in the 2011-13 Operating Budget. Do you think this graph accurately reflects where are our priorities as legislators should be?
