Holiday tree arrives at capitol Nov. 30, lighting ceremony on Dec. 4

The state holiday tree, the evergreen that adorns the Capitol Building rotunda each year, will arrive on the Capitol Campus on Monday, Nov. 30, at about 9:30 a.m.

The annual public tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by the Association of Washington Business (AWB), is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. in the state Capitol Building rotunda.

Black Lake Christmas Trees of Olympia is donating this year’s tree, a nearly 25-foot noble fir. The tree will be set up in the rotunda and adorned with 5,000 LED lights and decorations. The tree’s lower branches will hold stuffed characters, which will be donated to Seattle Children’s Hospital once the tree is taken down.

For 27 years, AWB has sponsored the Holiday Kids’ Tree Project, in which members and citizens provide donations. This year, more than 130 AWB members and businesses have raised nearly $24,000. The money will be distributed to 18 rural fire districts in Chelan, Grant, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Okanagan, Spokane, Thurston and Walla Walla counties to purchase toys and food for needy families.

This year’s theme is “Heroes Near and Far” and two Okanogan County firefighters and their families will help light the tree: Lt. Mark Crum, his wife, Sara, daughter Macey, age 10, and son Arlen, age 8; and senior firefighter Zack Gurney and his son Mason, age 4. Both firefighters were part of the teams that responded to the state’s largest-recorded wildfire this summer.

Bob Covington, deputy director of the Department of Enterprise Services, will welcome the public to the tree lighting ceremony.
