Floris Friday Message

Orchestra
Congratulations to our orchestra students on their excellent concerts!

Dear Families,

With May and spring finally here, we are already looking ahead to next year. While we look at class placements for the coming year, we want you to be aware of the process. We place students in classrooms based on numerous criteria. Students are grouped so that classrooms are heterogeneous, having a balance of boys and girls, a balance of academic performance and ability, and groups that will allow for the greatest support from our resource teachers.

Classroom teachers will have input into the recommendations for next year, as will our counselors and specialists. Our staff have been told that we will not take requests for particular teachers because we base our placement on instructional criteria and individual student strengths and needs.  It is unfair to give special consideration to some parents when it would be impossible to grant requests from all parents. Please be aware that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer. Our staff has been directed not to give out information about placement prior to that time. Children and parents are disappointed when changes have to be made due to staffing issues.

In addition, we also value parent input.  If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, email Mrs. Porter at Parent_input@fcps.edu by June 3rd.  (Note:  there is an underscore after ‘Parent’ and before ‘input’.)

It has been a wonderful week full of music and celebration!  We, first, congratulate all of our orchestra students on their excellent concerts!  Under the direction of our fabulous orchestra directors, Dr. Cheri Collins and Ms. Alex Geers, students shared pieces that were not only complicated and intricate for this age, but also well executed.  It’s not often you find such talent in one school!

We also congratulate Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Murphy, and our all county chorus students who performed last Saturday at Hayfield Secondary School.

Our teachers are known for providing the highest level of instruction for students, and we hope they feel the love as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation next week. Our sincerest appreciation goes out to one of the hardest working team of teachers in the county!

We appreciate your input, as well as the support you provide for the school.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

From the Health Room

It’s that time of year!  Allergies are a real problem this spring.  Itchy eyes, runny noses, sore throats and stomach aches.  Pollen is covering everything outside. It is a great time to remind everyone to have good hand washing goals. Washing hands when you come inside. Remember it gets on your clothes, hair and skin. Wash it off.

If your child stays home due to illness, please remember to list specific symptoms when you call the attendance line.  For example, fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, nauseous or diarrhea. If you have a doctor confirmed diagnosis of a communicable disease, please let us know.

Thank you for helping keep our students healthy.
