Recently, under the direction of Dr. Orna Intrator (Dr. Intrator is a long-term care researcher with both the Providence VA Medical Center and Brown University), the Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) established a Data and Analysis Center (GEC DAC) located on the campus of the Providence VA Medical Center. The GEC DAC will evaluate VA geriatric and extended care programs and provide evidence-based information to serve GEC’s programmatic, planning, and policy needs. Because the majority of older Veterans receive care both from VA and outside the VA, this evaluation must take into account not just VA services but the full range of health care Veterans receive. The GEC DAC will use a new method that integrates VA data with Medicare and Medicaid data. This data is able to anonymously track individuals’ health care utilization and identify patterns of care.
