SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns Visits St. Louis

SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns visited St. Louis on May 6, 2013.  While in St. Louis, she met the St. Louis Mayor and County Executive, toured the Helix Center Biotech Incubator, visited the Bio Research & Development Growth (BRDG) Park and while there conducted a round table with government officials and small businesses from the St. Louis Bioscience Jobs and Innovation Challenge cluster.  Later that day she spoke at the Association for Enterprise Opportunity National Conference and at the Small Business Week of Eastern Missouri Small Business Lenders Award Luncheon.  She also met with SBA’s St. Louis District Office staff and resource partners.

Deputy Administrator Johns enjoyed lunch at local eateries Pappy’s Smokehouse and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard.  “Wonderful! Fantastic!” were her descriptions.  She and her staff assistant said that that when they return to St. Louis they will definitely go back to both restaurants.

There is a nationwide and government wide push to urge entrepreneurs and small business owners to think globally. Exporting makes sense for businesses, including small businesses, that have products or services that buyers in Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere around the world can purchase or use. Keep in mind that ninety-five percent of potential customers (two-thirds of the world’s purchasing power) are outside the US; so focusing solely on domestic sales means you’re competing for only five percent of your target market. >Read More

Shave and a Haircut and Some Community Involvement for You, Mister?

How Grace Hill Women’s Business Center and an SBA Microloan Made a (Revised) Dream Come True

When Carla Reid signed up for Grace Hill Women’s Business Centers’ Business Development Class she really had no intention of opening a business—ever. With her background and passion in social services, her goal was to open a non-profit entity to offer men in the community employment training and computer skills classes to help them find work. Maybe in the distant future she could build a reputation and get client referrals from area agencies. But after a friend mentioned the business development class, she was curious and signed up.

Thanks to the class, and help from the SBA Microloan program, she’s turned her dream to help her clients into a for-profit business. >Read More
