SBA PR & USVI Calls for 2013 Small Business Person of the Year Award Nominations
SAN JUAN, PR -- The Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration has begun accepting nominations for the 2013 National Small Business Person of the Year Award.
Since 1963, National Small Business Week has recognized the outstanding achievements of America’s small businesses for their contributions to their local communities, and to our nation’s economy. In 2013, the 50th year celebration will honor the nation’s 27 million small businesses.
“For nearly 50 years, the SBA has set aside one week to recognize the extraordinary contributions entrepreneurs and small business owners make to our economic development and society in general,” said SBA Deputy District Director María de los Ángeles de Jesús. “We are privileged to count with an outstanding wealth of talented small business entrepreneurs in our district, and we encourage members of the community in both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to serve as their champions.”
For the Small Business Person of the Year award, the SBA seeks individuals whose companies have demonstrated staying power, sustained growth, increase in sales, job creation and/or retention, response to adversity, and social responsibility, among other criteria. In addition, nominations in the categories of Small Business Exporter of the Year, SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Family-Owned Business of the Year, and Entrepreneurial Success will also be accepted and honored at the Puerto Rico & USVI district level.
The SBA has launched a new online portal to facilitate the nominations process. The dedicated web portal, accessible at http://nationalsmallbusinessweek.sba.gov/, will make it easier to submit and track submissions of nominees for Small Business Week 2013, and is now actively accepting nominations of noteworthy small businesses.
Nominations will be accepted from SBA resource partners and lenders, economic development organizations, elected officials and individuals in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Self-nominations are also allowed. In addition to the portal, nominations can also be sent directly to the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands district office at U.S. Small Business Administration, 273 Ponce de León Ave., Plaza Scotiabank Suite 510, San Juan, PR 00917. All nominations must be submitted or postmarked to the SBA by January 3, 2013.
The winners selected in both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will go on to compete for SBA’s most prestigious award in the country -- National Small Business Person of the Year. Winners will be honored next spring at local awards ceremonies in San Juan and in St. Thomas or St. Croix, and will then be invited to attend the presidentially declared National Small Business Week celebrations in Washington, D.C.
