It's Your Business!

U.S. Small Business Administration, Massachusetts District Office
National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day

The SBA and AARP Join Forces to Support Encore Entrepreneurs in Massachusetts

The U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP will team up Oct. 2 to host the first Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day in Boston, Massachusetts.  The event is targeted at entrepreneurs over the age of 50 to match these “encore entrepreneurs” with successful business owners and community leaders for advice and assistance.  This Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day is part of a larger effort by SBA and AARP to promote entrepreneurship among individuals ages 50 and older. The events will help connect encore entrepreneurs with mentors from SBA’s network of Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, and SCORE chapters who can help throughout the life of an entrepreneur’s business.

Help Shape the Future of Small Business Innovation

Though the time is short we would like to suggest an opportunity to be a part of an unusual, participant driven conversation about innovation. The SBA is sponsoring a day long event in Seattle on September 19th called "Small Business and Government: Maximizing Entrepreneurship, Driving Innovation." While most of us on the East Coast will find it difficult to attend in person, we are live- streaming the entire day. We also have an opportunity to help shape the conversation BEFORE the event on September 19th by jumping onto this website: http://n50.onetotheworld.net/commerce04 - and clicking the SUPERCHAT button to start or join a thread with your own thoughts, new concepts, questions or big ideas. The moderators, speakers and panelists will be following the threads.

New England has a LOT to say about how to drive innovation. Let’s begin the conversation today, and then tune in on Wednesday the 19th where you can continue to participate via tweet, chat or with comments and questions directed to the panelists and speakers during the event.  The hashtag for this event is: #SBGSeattle.  For details go to:  www.sba.gov/advocacy

Save the Date!

On Friday, November 2, 2012 the SBA's Massachusetts District Office will hold its Annual Meeting at the Tip O'Neill federal building in Boston, Massachusetts. The event will celebrate the graduation of the Emerging 200 Class as well as the achievements of SBA lenders and small businesses.

Be sure to follow us on twitter or visit our website at www.sba.gov/ma for more information as we get closer to this event!

New SBA Web Tool to Help with Market Research

Small business owners and start-ups across the country can now take advantage of a new business tool to help them compete and grow.  The free tool, called SizeUp, helps businesses identify new customers and compare their performance against other businesses in their industry with data collected from hundreds of private and public sources.  The tool can be found at www.sba.gov/sizeup.

SizeUp works by analyzing a business in comparison to other similar businesses in the same trade and provides geographic information on the marketplace, areas recommended for advertising, and prospective customers.  This useful tech tool delivers market data directly to business owners to help them make better business decisions based on competitive research analysis.

GIS Planning, Inc., the company that created SizeUp, has licensed the tool to SBA for one year.   SBA’s acceptance of this product is not an endorsement of the opinions, products or services of GIS Planning, Inc.
