Room Reservations: January 2013 MEP Update Meeting

On January 29 – 30, 2013 NIST MEP will host the January Update Meeting for center leadership and other relevant staff to discuss the status of the MEP system, changes in manufacturing, and how best to position the MEP to provide these services going forward. It is critical for NIST MEP to focus on growing the capacity and skill set of the MEP system in order to meet the demand for services and the changing needs of the manufacturers in responding to expanding global competition. These meetings provide MEP with the opportunity to ensure center staff are educated and aware of the latest tools, topics, and goals of the MEP system. These update meetings are open to all Center staff. The intent of them is to provide an opportunity for all levels of the organization to gain a better understanding of the activities occurring within the MEP system.

The meeting will begin at 1:00 pm on Tuesday the 29th and end by 2:30 pm on Wednesday the 30th. Some of the planned topics include:

  • 2012 Year in Review
  • Strategy and objectives for 2013
  • MEP program and policy changes
  • CEO engagement and market penetration
  • Building an innovation practice

  • What's Happening Around MEP!

    Helping Long Island Students
    From Long Island Forum for Technology
    Long Beach High School (LBHS) specializes in the Metal shop and Automotive programs to get high school students interested in pursuing a career in the engineering and technology industry. Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, most of their hand tools and electric equipment were damaged. Without equipment the Metal Shop and Automotive programs are at a halt. The MEP Center in Long Island, LIFT is working to to help find replacement equipment.

    The 9th Edition of the Facts About Modern Manufacturing, a collaboration between the Manufacturing Institute, the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) is now available. The 2012 edition of Facts is a compilation of 65 slides and analysis presenting a wide array of data for the manufacturing sector, highlights its importance to the U.S. and global economy, and is the first comprehensive update from the groups since 2009.     NIST MEP is participating in a series of Intellectual Property Webinars hosted by The National Council for Entrepreneurial Technology Transfer (NCET2).  The focus is to help bridge the knowledge gap on Intellectual Property Law Issues between the US Government and various stakeholders. The next scheduled webinar is December 12, 2012, on Protecting IP in Global Markets: Understanding a PCT, international issues on IP procurement, markets and competitors.     New! Toyota Kata Workshop and Summit hosted by Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions

    Learn from Mike Rother, the author of "Toyota Kata: Managing People for Improvement, Adaptiveness and Superior Results"

    • Obtain a basic understanding of the Toyota Improvement Kata Trajectory (i.e. Vision/Challenge, Current Condition, Target Condition, Obstacles, PDCA)
    • Recognize the value of the Coaching Kata Methodology (i.e., how the Value Adders, Learner and 1st and 2nd Coaches interact via the 5 Questions)
    • Gain a practitioner’s view of how the Toyota Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata can be used in conjunction with the Lean 101 “Buzz Electronics” simulation to help enhance the learning of these methodologies
