Job Summary:
This position is located in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Approval and Certification Center (A&CC;), US Department of Labor in Triadelphia, WV. This work is accomplished through complex engineering and technical in‑house and field investigations; testing of instruments, equipment and components; and reviewing/analyzing plans, documentation, and specifications submitted by manufacturers. The Division responds to requests from manufacturers, mine operators, MSHA offices, and other federal and state agencies when expert knowledge and experience are needed in meeting and applying the permissibility standards and criteria of many diverse electrical equipment, components and instrumentation. Analysis includes electrical components and systems to many diverse products, ranging from cap lamps and portable electronic instruments to mining machinery, including continuous miners and longwall mining systems. The Division develops, updates, and implements new permissibility programs, criteria, standards, and test procedures and techniques in electrical equipment and instrument safety. The Division also develops and proposes new or revised Federal regulations. It provides expertise and guidance and monitors research contracts addressing electrical equipment, instrumentation and components. The end product of that research may be a new or revised permissibility standard or criteria or may be directly related to new technological approaches for meeting permissibility requirements.
