Job Summary:
This is a student internship appointment. Upon completion of requirements for graduation and successful completion of the internship, the appointee may become eligible for non-competitive conversion, at the agency's discretion, to a term or permanent position in the competitive service. Appointee must sign a DOL Pathways Intern Program Participant Agreement. This position is located in the Atlanta Regional Office in the Office of Public Affairs (OPA). The mission of the office is to provide the Department with a comprehensive regional public affairs program designed to enhance program effectiveness and inform the public of the Department's policies, programs and activities. OPA is the Department's sole source of public affairs support in the regions. The primary purpose of this position is to participate with the Regional Director for Public Affairs (RDPA) in planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive public affairs program for the region, assure expeditious handling of all public affairs responsibilities and activities and provide program leadership in the absence of the RDPA. The entire duration of the internship constitutes a trial period. Job Summary:
This position is located in the Mine, Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), District Office 6 located in Pikeville, Kentucky. The district office has primary responsibility for enforcement of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act) and its implementing regulations contained in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR). The District is responsible for regular inspection activities, the approval of plans for ventilation and dust control, roof control, and impoundments, and for training. The incumbent in this position provides program and administrative support, as well as liaison duties in direct support of the supervisor and a cadre of Mine Safety and Health Inspectors. Due to the nature of the work performed, the supervisor and inspectors are required to be out of the office for extended periods of time, necessitating that the incumbent work independently to ensure the efficiency and effectivness of the functions of the office. The incumbent provides program support to the district as the district expert on the Mine Information System (MIS)coding and procedures. The data on the MIS system is used by MSHA to determine enforcement activities, special focus or emphasis projects, and industry's compliance with the Act.
