As Air Force Space Command approaches its 30th Anniversary on 1 Sep, here is a significant milestone from the command's history...

On 1 May 1983, the Air Force took a big step pulling together under the new AFSPC the active ground and space-based systems scattered among various Air Force commands. Most significantly, SAC transferred to Space Command resource management of the Defense Support Program (DSP), the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), all missile warning and space surveillance radars and optical systems (PAVE PAWS, BMEWS, PARCS, Cobra Dane, AN/FPS-85, Baker Nunns, GEODSS, etc.) as well as Thule and Sondrestrom Air Bases in Greenland, and Shemya AFB and Clear AFS in Alaska.
