What is the current policy of departments that carry electrically tested gloves on fire apparatus?
If you have removed the gloves from apparatus, what were the factors that led to that decision?

Merry Christmas,
The Southaven Fire Department is a mid-sized department with 116 operational personnel, operating out of 4 stations. We are in the process of transitioning to a Field Training Officer (FTO)program; which will be shift based, to assist the Training Division in the delivery of courseware, both print and online, to the shifts as well as assist in live fire practical and other training at the training facility. I am looking for other like sized departments who currently implement such an arrangement and the pro’s and con’s of the operation. Any criteria used to evaluate the potential instructors would be especially helpful, as well as types of programs that your department utilizes these FTO’s for. Any additional feedback and SOG/Policies would be appreciated as well.

I am developing a Master Training Calendar for my department that includes all of the required and mandated training that needs to be completed annually or periodically. I would appreciate any models or examples of Training Calendars or Training Schedules that departments have developed. In addition, I am looking for a comprehensive list of all of the training that is mandated or required for firefighters.
Thanks in advance.

Study Determines Optimal Chest Compression Rate
Successful resuscitation from cardiac arrest was optimized at 100–120 compressions/minute
By Ahamed H. Idris, MD | From the EMS State of the Science 2012 Issue
The quality of CPR and chest compressions are key factors for survival from cardiac arrest.1 Over the past 50 years, there has been a progressive increase in the recommended rate of chest compressions during CPR.
In 1960, the recommended rate was 60 compressions/minute; this increased to at least 100 compressions/minute in the latest guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2010.(1–4) However, guidance is not provided for a maximum chest compression rate.

NFPA's Fire Science and Technology Educators Section Announces Their New LinkedIn Communications Site
NFPA’s Fire Science and Technology Educators Section Announce a New LinkedIn Site
The Fire Science and Technology Educators (FSTE) section of the National Fire Protection Association is one of the longest standing sections, which maintains a membership base of over 890 members. The section focuses on the advancement of the national educational environment in fire science and technology. The membership for this section are NFPA members who are an instructor, an administrator, or full or adjunct faculty member at an institution of higher education, and others who are interested in the objectives of the Section. See our website for more information: http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?categoryID=230&itemID=20277&URL=Membership/Member%20Sections/Fire%20Science%20and%20Technology%20Educators
One of our goals is to increase our connection and relationship with the National Fire Academy’s Fire and Emergency Service Higher Education (FESHE) membership. The first and easiest to establish is a LinkedIn site, where both FESHE and FSTE members could share information/topics related to our joint missions. Thanks to our NFPA liaison, Courtney O’neill, we have achieved this goal. However, we need more members to the site to increase its effectiveness and traffic. This also increases the exposure of FESHE. TRADE and the fantastic National Professional Development Symposium to other educators. The Only Way to Firefighter Safety is Through Knowledge
Fire Engineering eNewsletter, August 13, 2012
Over the past few years, there have been a lot of discussions about firefighter safety in the international firefighting community. Everyone seems to be very concerned about how to make firefighting safer and how to reduce injuries and fatalities. This is, of course, very important, and it's interesting to see how things develop. I believe every measure possible should be taken to protect those who protect. But there is one thing I don't understand: as soon as someone suggests something radical or something that is a little bit out of the ordinary, a lot of people seem to get very upset. How come so many in this business talk about firefighter safety but so few seem to understand what firefighter safety is about?
Looking at reports on injuries and casualties in the fire service is very interesting. It's easy to find conclusions such as "rapid change in fire conditions," "stress," "exhaustion," "fell from tower ladder," or "vehicle crash." But, and this is actually the crux of the matter, I still haven't found any reports saying that the reason for injuries and casualties was a lack of knowledge. Isn't that what they all are, really? It might not be that the individual firefighter has a lack of knowledge but that the fire service community has a lack of knowledge. And this is much worse, since it's a lot harder to change a system than to change an individual.
More than 2,000 NY Responders Will Receive Assistance to Rebuild after Hurricane
NEW YORK -- More than 2,000 New York City first responders who were severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy will receive assistance from funds now being administered by the New York City Police Foundation and FDNY Foundation.
The funds, made possible by a generous gift of over $2.3 million by Emigrant Bank and its Chairman, Mr. Howard P. Milstein, will go to first responders who tirelessly served the public while their own homes and families were severely affected by the storm.
Fire House Cooking, Conversation and Tradition
Looking for a good “how to” firehouse cooking site. Might I suggest: Fire House Cuisine with Kipp Rix. Sponosred by Fire Engineering magazine, Kip combines healthy recipes with conversation and commentary that is relevant to life in today’s fire house.

NFA Sponsored 2-Day Off-Campus Courses
2-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information
A strong partnership exists between NFA and State and local Fire Training Systems to advance the professional development of fire service personnel. This partnership has resulted in the ongoing development and delivery of the Academy's distance delivery curriculum.
Many volunteer and career fire service personnel cannot take time to attend resident programs, so these off-campus delivery courses, most of which are 2-days in length, provide training opportunities within the State and local communities. Courses are selected and cosponsored jointly by NFA and State and local fire training systems. States have the option of electing to use some/all off-campus deliveries as Train-the-Trainer Programs Course materials will be handed off in digital form to the State Training Systems hosting Train-the-Trainer deliveries.
For information on hosting a Two-Day Off-Campus course, e-mail the NFA Off-Campus Program Manager for your state.

NFA Sponsored 6-Day and 10-Day Off-Campus Courses
6- and 10-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information
6- and 10-day deliveries are developed because of limited space at the Emmitsburg campus. These courses provide the fire service and allied professionals the opportunity to attend NFA on-campus courses within their geographical region. They mirror 6- and 10-day courses normally taught at NFA's resident facility. Although minor modifications sometimes are required, basic course content and materials are the same as on-campus courses. NFA provides two instructors per course, paralleling on-campus delivery, plus all training materials.
