Portland (OR) Fire & Rescue is in the midst of a high-rise operational policy update.  We would be interested in reviewing other fire department policies specific to operations at high-rise structures with both automatic and manual standpipe systems.  In particular, we're interested in water supply procedures for supplying water flow into the building's FDC.

Our department is exploring the use of face book and twitter. I would like to know how much technical difficulties there are regarding time, money and technical support needed. Our department is small and we do not have a PIO other than the chief.

Our department has just reorganized our Confined Space Team.  We are in the process of purchasing new equipment and are beginning to train again.  I have been assigned Team Leader and I am in need of Confined Space Checklist's, equipment used, ect.  If anyone is willing to share what they have, that would be greatly appreciated.

Public Assistance Grants for Fire Departments Impacted by Hurricane Sandy

November 20, 2012 

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) would like to encourage the fire departments and fire service leadership in the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy to be aware that there may be additional financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist with the recovery efforts of all fire departments. 

The Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program has been approved for most areas impacted by the storm.  The focus of FEMA's PA Grant Program is to assist with the recovery efforts involving critical infrastructures.  Fire station damage, lost equipment and vehicles may be covered by this FEMA program.  The USFA encourages all fire service leaders in the impacted areas of Hurricane Sandy to ensure your department damages and losses are brought to the attention of county and state emergency management officials.  By notifying county and state emergency management officials, the PA Grant Program eligibility review is started.

During a recent trip by U.S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell to the impacted areas of Hurricane Sandy, the Administrator was struck by the significant damage done to fire departments, their equipment and stations.  The Administrator wants to ensure all fire department leaders are aware of FEMA's PA Grant Program and are in contact with local and state emergency management officials to begin a review of department needs.

NYC Rescuers Find Themselves Victims of Sandy

Superstorm Sandy has upended things in a unique way for first responders, reports the Associated Press.

Many are spending their working hours helping a battered city get back on its feet, only to return home to find destruction as bad as any in the city.

The NYPD says an estimated 1,300 officers suffered a "catastrophic" loss during the storm. And the Fire Department says 500 firefighters have registered their homes as damaged or destroyed. That figure doesn't include people who lost vehicles or were displaced from homes still without power.

"This whole community is devastated, but they've still got to go to work," said Roy Richter, president of the Captains Endowment Association, an NYPD union. "Give your wife and children a blanket and a candle, and say, 'I'll see you in 12 to 16 hours."

For generations, police officers and firefighters heading home exhausted at the end of their shifts have found tranquility in Breezy Point, which sits in sandy, wind-swept isolation at the tip of the Rockaway peninsula that protects parts of New York City from the Atlantic surf.

Hurricane Help on the Way: Area Companies Send Surplus Fire Gear to N.Y.

A truckload of surplus firefighting equipment and household goods is on its way to Long Island, N.Y., for recovery supplies after Hurricane Sandy, courtesy of the generosity of local companies and the public.

Representatives from the Terry Farrell Fire Fighters Fund, Pa. chapter, picked up the donations at the Gettysburg Fire Department Friday afternoon.

"We knew they were coming for the firefighting equipment, so we asked the public to donate the household goods as well," said GFD Captain Brandon Hiller.

The collection cache that will be distributed among six fire companies on Long Island was impressive. "This is blowing me away," said Laura Maxwell of the Farrell Fund as she watched them load the equipment. "I don't know if we have enough room in the vehicles for this. We needed a tractor trailer."

Maxwell said the Fund started after 911 when Farrell passed away in Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. She said firefighters benefiting from the donations have been responding in their personal vehicles to scenes. "Through this shout-out we've been able to ascertain two fire trucks that have been donated and going to Long Island," Maxwell said.

NFA Sponsored 2-Day Off-Campus Courses

2-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information

 

A strong partnership exists between NFA and State and local Fire Training Systems to advance the professional development of fire service personnel. This partnership has resulted in the ongoing development and delivery of the Academy's distance delivery curriculum.

Many volunteer and career fire service personnel cannot take time to attend resident programs, so these off-campus delivery courses, most of which are 2-days in length, provide training opportunities within the State and local communities. Courses are selected and cosponsored jointly by NFA and State and local fire training systems. States have the option of electing to use some/all off-campus deliveries as Train-the-Trainer Programs Course materials will be handed off in digital form to the State Training Systems hosting Train-the-Trainer deliveries.

NFA Sponsored 6-Day and 10-Day Off-Campus Courses

6- and 10-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information

6- and 10-day deliveries are developed because of limited space at the Emmitsburg campus. These courses provide the fire service and allied professionals the opportunity to attend NFA on-campus courses within their geographical region. They mirror 6- and 10-day courses normally taught at NFA's resident facility. Although minor modifications sometimes are required, basic course content and materials are the same as on-campus courses. NFA provides two instructors per course, paralleling on-campus delivery, plus all training materials.
