All:

As my department is a volunteer agency, we are always thinking out of the box to keep people motivated and to provide cutting edge training.

One of the items we are looking at is, a trip for a volunteer firefighter or ems responder to FDIC. This would be a “reward” or “item” as part of a Firefighter of the Year or some other like program.

Does anyone else’s department have something like this set up?

What are the guidelines and procedures that are used to select the volunteer?

Are these people that are “sponsored” required to out brief and to instruct to other department members on what they learned at FDIC?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

One of my key academy lead instructors sent me the following:

Have we looked into the respiratory hazards involved in burning the paint off the 40-ft steel shipping containers that make up our live fire facility? I'm concerned with what it's coated with. Metal coatings - designed to inhibit corrosion - are loaded with all kinds of nasty stuff. Are we exposing our guys to nasty fumes from these metal coatings? Many containing lead, cadmium, and a whole slew of other nasty stuff. When we started burning in the original cans I asked a chemist who is a former FD LT and current fire science professor at our community college about this stuff. We looked at the MSDS sheets for the paint used on them, and I believe his words were something like "not good".

Does anyone have information on this?  I fundamentally agree with him  and we need to protect our people.

4.

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of developing an acting Lieutenant program and one of the presentations that the firefighters have requested is one on “routine” emergencies (ie: carbon monoxide alarms, elevator emergencies, odor investigations, natural gas leak, water leak, electrical problem, etc). Does anyone have a powerpoint developed to address these and other issues? I have a Dropbox account should the file size be too large for email.

Thank You!

I am currently doing a project regarding what different agencies charge for and how much is charged.  If anyone has a fee schedule they are willing to share I would very much appreciate it.  This could include charges such as from prevention for plan reviews/inspections, operations for DUI or out of district calls, administration for reports or research.  Thank you for your consideration.

Greetings,

Apologies if you have seen this before, and rest assured this is my request.

I need your help. I’m conducting research on the effectiveness of the NIMS mandated ICS to complete my Master’s Thesis.

Having completed the Executive Fire Officer Program, I’m aware how many of these requests you probably receive, and how they all promise the questionnaire to be short and easy.

I assure you, this one is- it should take no more than ten minutes of your time and your feedback will help me greatly. Here is a link to follow (you may have to cut and paste it into your browser).

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8PPPK8J

I would also appreciate your forwarding this to any Command level Officer who would also be willing to help.

Finally, I’ve built no mechanism into the questionnaire to prevent duplication from the same agency. Please do not forward this to someone in your agency, or complete the questionnaire more than once.

Respectfully,

MINOR CALLS WON'T GET RIALTO AMBULANCES

Anxious to keep his city's three paramedic ambulances available for medical emergencies, Rialto's fire chief no longer is sending them to treat broken fingers and other minor problems.

"I'm still going to send a paramedic to every call," Chief Mat Fratus emphasized. "But I'm not going to send multiple paramedic units to every call."

Beginning Monday, Nov. 5, dispatchers will assign only a paramedic fire engine to minor medical calls in Rialto. The aim is to keep the three Fire Department ambulances available for more serious emergencies, including heart attacks, strokes, injury traffic crashes and violent crimes because studies show that saving time reaching those calls tends to save lives.

Other agencies around Inland Southern California will track the new program in Rialto and assess its effectiveness.

Steel Homes with Limitless Span

Builder Online

October 16, 2012

“It’s essentially a kit of parts. Not unlike IKEA furniture.” That’s how David McAdam describes a lightweight framing system his company, Encino, Calif.–based Blue Sky Building Systems, has been marketing for two years.

The system—which modifies what the manufacturer FCP Structures uses to add mezzanines to factories—employs galvanized steel for a point-loaded, bidirectional, moment-resisting frame.

The Blue Sky Frame, as it’s called, is made from 70 percent recycled material. A steel fabricator in Fontana, Calif., AEP Span, shapes and cuts the framing to order and ships it flat to the jobsite. The system is then bolted to peripheral steel columns that raise the house off the ground, minimizing site excavation and environmental disruption.

Plastic Homes in the Future?

Builder Online

October 16, 2012

Every year, trillions of tons of plastic-made products—the bulk of which is shopping bags, obsolete electronics, and empty water bottles—get dumped into landfills worldwide. So far, recycling efforts have made barely a dent in this waste pile. But that might change if recycled plastic were to emerge as a core structural component for new-home construction.

To those builders and suppliers who say “don’t hold your breath,” one academic who has spent his career working with recycled plastic responds confidently that this evolution is coming. Dr. Tom Nosker of Rutgers University invented a structural composite material made from 100 percent recycled plastic that Axion International now uses to make railroad ties and bridges. Nosker predicts it is “very likely” that recycled plastics will be used more widely to build homes.

Safe Houses Driving Construction Innovation

Wall Street Journal

November 01, 2012

The Corbi family's house looks like many other modern homes in the Hollywood Hills, with white walls, large glass windows and views of downtown Los Angeles. But it has some key differences from its neighbors. The house has been built to withstand nearly every type of disaster scenario imaginable, from storms to high-magnitude earthquakes to wildfires to pandemic to a rare but potentially crippling high-frequency electromagnetic pulse attack triggered by a nuclear bomb, solar flare or specialized weapon. A wine cellar in the basement doubles as an underground bunker. If all else fails, a rooftop helipad allows for a last-ditch emergency exit.

TRADE Regional NFA Course Calendar

NFA Sponsored 2-Day Off-Campus Courses

2-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information

A strong partnership exists between NFA and State and local Fire Training Systems to advance the professional development of fire service personnel. This partnership has resulted in the ongoing development and delivery of the Academy's distance delivery curriculum.

Many volunteer and career fire service personnel cannot take time to attend resident programs, so these off-campus delivery courses, most of which are 2-days in length, provide training opportunities within the State and local communities. Courses are selected and cosponsored jointly by NFA and State and local fire training systems. States have the option of electing to use some/all off-campus deliveries as Train-the-Trainer Programs Course materials will be handed off in digital form to the State Training Systems hosting Train-the-Trainer deliveries.

For information on hosting a Two-Day Off-Campus course, e-mail the NFA Off-Campus Program Manager for your state.

See NFA Sponsored 2-Day off-campus Course List: http://apps.usfa.fema.gov/nfacourses/catalog/search?courseDeliveries=2&&forget=true

NFA Sponsored 6-Day and 10-Day Off-Campus Courses

6- and 10-day off-campus course descriptions, schedules, and application information

6- and 10-day deliveries are developed because of limited space at the Emmitsburg campus. These courses provide the fire service and allied professionals the opportunity to attend NFA on-campus courses within their geographical region. They mirror 6- and 10-day courses normally taught at NFA's resident facility. Although minor modifications sometimes are required, basic course content and materials are the same as on-campus courses. NFA provides two instructors per course, paralleling on-campus delivery, plus all training materials.
