Agriculture Deputy Secretary Merrigan Helps to Launch New USDA’s People’s Gardens in Baltimore

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2011 – TOMORROW, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan and city leaders will visit Baltimore’s Cherry Hill neighborhood to announce a People’s Garden grant award to benefit the Baltimore community. The announcement is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) continuing efforts to combat malnutrition while supporting local and regional food systems.

There are more than 1,400 People’s Gardens across the nation, three U.S. territories and nine foreign countries. USDA is partnering with over 600 local organizations to create and maintain these gardens. The simple act of planting a garden can help unite neighborhoods in a common effort and inspire locally-led solutions to challenges facing our country. To date, the People’s Garden has donated over 1 million pounds of produce to local food banks, food kitchens and other charitable organizations through their ‘Share Your Harvest’ campaign.
