Regulators to assess new nuclear reactor design

The Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency have received a formal request from the Minister of State for Energy to start generic design assessment work on a new nuclear reactor for the UK. We published a news story on our website when the request came in.

Changes to incident reporting arrangements

Revised arrangements are now in place for licencees and other dutyholders to report incidents to the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Arrangements for the reporting of security incidents remain unchanged. Read more on ONR's website.

Fukushima lessons learned: UK action plan published

The Office for Nuclear Regulation has prepared a report for the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group outlining how the UK will continue to implement lessons learned from the Fukushima Dai-ichi incident in 2011.

Annual publication of nuclear materials balance for 2011/2012

Every year the Office for Nuclear Regulation routinely publishes 'nuclear materials balance figures' showing the difference between the nuclear material inventory recorded in the UK and the inventory as measured at periodic physical stock takes. The 2011/2012 figures conform to the pattern of previous years and do not give rise to safety or security concerns.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation last year consulted on its proposed approach to interpreting ‘bulk quantities’ of radioactive matter. We have now published our position statement which provides clarity for ONR inspectors and prospective operators.

Annual security report published

The Office for Nuclear Regulation has published its annual report on security within the UK’s civil nuclear industry. The regulator routinely produces this report to provide an assurance to the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change on the state of civil nuclear security and on the effectiveness of regulation. The report covers April 2011 to March 2012.

Detailed emergency planning zones at UK installations

For many UK nuclear sites, regulations enforced by the Office for Nuclear Regulation require local authorities in those areas to prepare plans for dealing with off-site emergencies. ONR determines the distance that must be covered by these plans. They differ from site to site. We have added a new page to our website to detail the size of all such planning zones in place in the UK.
