New reactors quarterly update, July-September

The Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency have published their latest Generic Design Assessment (GDA) quarterly progress report.

It contains detail about the closure of six further GDA issues on the EDF and AREVA UK EPR™ reactor design.  It also provides more detail on the wider design assessment process.

Since this report was written, ONR and the Environment Agency have closed nine more issues.

There are now a total of 18 GDA issues closed, leaving 13 remaining.

Joint regulators' response to Horizon announcement

On 30 October, GE-Hitachi was confirmed as the preferred bidder for Horizon Nuclear Power, the company which wants to build new nuclear power stations at Wylfa on Anglesey and in Oldbury, Gloucestershire.

ONR and the Environment Agency have not been formally approached about a generic design assessment for any new reactor, but are aware this is a possibility given this announcement.

If there was to be a new generic design assessment, ONR and the Environment Agency would have formal discussions with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the designer or 'requesting party' before making any decisions about timescales or resources for the assessment process.
