Doak Draws Line in the Sand

NEW ORLEANS Commissioner John D. Doak called for a historic vote on Tuesday, March 6th during the 2012 NAIC Spring 2012 National Meeting concerning the protection of religious liberties in healthcare.

“Religious freedom is a basic constitutional right granted by our founding fathers and paid for by the sacrifice of millions of veterans for all the citizens of the United States to enjoy, and currently that right is being eroded,” Doak stated.

As an extension of those religious freedoms, Commissioner Doak questioned, “Where does it stop? If we do not stand up and protect religious liberties in healthcare now, then when? Today, I make my stand.”

His resolution would have united all elected and appointed insurance commissioners in protecting constitutionally provided religious freedoms from federally mandated healthcare coverage contradicting religious doctrine.

Unfortunately, Commissioner Doak’s resolution failed to clear the committee process because it lacked a second from another NAIC member.

“I am disappointed that no appointed or elected insurance commissioner joined me today, but I will never be ashamed of making a public stand for my beliefs and the rights of citizens.”

Commissioner Doak’s bid to unite the NAIC in protecting religious freedoms in healthcare advanced the conversation, “I am happy that this debate will continue and that my resolution gained attention for the growing unrest citizens have towards the trampling of their First Amendment rights.”
