Next week the Hennepin County Board
will vote to direct staff to align its policies, procedures, and employee benefit
coverage to match the Freedom to
Marry Bill.
Governor Mark Dayton signed the Freedom to Marry Bill and on August 1st Hennepin
County staff will be prepared to both process marriage applications for LGBT couples and extend benefit coverage to any married county employee.
Thanks are due to my colleagues on the County Board who support
this action.
Please stop by Roosevelt Library (4026 28th Ave S, Minneapolis) on Saturday, June 1st at 9:30 AM for a grand opening celebration. The library will officially reopen at 10:00.
After a two year renovation the new library features more public computers, iPads
for patrons to use within the building, a refreshed collection, a new
multi-purpose room, new bike racks, and a freshly tuck pointed structure.
I am very pleased with the renovation of this historic building. Public meetings helped architects respond to community needs while retaining and refining the beauty of the original structure.

Two year experiment to help vets with addiction and mental illness is working
Hennepin County's Veterans Court established a multidisciplinary team to promote sobriety, recovery, and stability by coordinating responses from various government agencies and county departments. The seamless referral process from the court and Hennepin County's Veterans Service Office to VA Hospitals, local treatment and probation services, and volunteer veteran mentors.
An analysis of the Court conducted by the Judicial District found that participants were less likely to re-offend, were more likely to stay sober, have better relationships, a stable life, and take advantage of VA benefits and services.
Here's a perspective on how the Veterans Court affected the life on one individual and how it could help more veterans if the model was replicated.

Hennepin
County invested Transit Oriented Development (TOD) funds to add 3
