Sheriff's Deputies increase patrols in downtown Minneapolis

Deputies patrol downtown Minneapolis
The Hennepin County Sheriffs Office has increased the number of deputies patrolling downtown Minneapolis. In partnership with the Minneapolis Police Department, deputies work into bar close hours from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.  Previously, the deputies were walking the beat between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.  Additionally, the Sheriffs Office has doubled the number of deputies deployed to downtown.

Each summer, the Sheriff’s Office partners with the Minneapolis Police Department, Metro Transit Police, and the Downtown Improvement District on a program called, SafeZone. The goal is to keep the downtown safe for people, who work, live, shop and visit downtown. Sheriff’s Office deputies and law enforcement officers from the other partner agencies will walk the downtown beat in a proactive, high-profile effort to prevent crime and respond to public safety issues.

A thank you note for increased patrols downtown

Thank you for SafeZone

Vet's grave disturbed

The Hennepin County’s Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs are investigating an incident in which a grave site was significantly disturbed at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

On July 12, a maintenance worker discovered that one grave site had been disturbed.  A significant amount of ground and soil had been removed. The decedent was a veteran of the World War II-era.  He had been buried at the cemetery in the 1970’s.

“This is the final resting place and a place of honor for the men and women who have served our country,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, “For anyone to desecrate a grave site here, it is not only a disturbing crime, it is extremely disrespectful to all military veterans and their families.”

The person or persons responsible for this crime could face felony-level charges.  Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 763-525-6216 or call 911.

Crackdown on drunk boating

Sheriff's Water Patrol on Lake Minnetonka
The Sheriff’s Office worked in connection with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) during Operation Dry Water. The operation was designed to both remove intoxicated boat operators and educate people about the hazards of piloting a boat while drunk.

At the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and special deputy volunteers took part in the stepped up enforcement effort on Lake Minnetonka.

Sheriff Stanek reminds boat operators to designate a sober operator prior to your day of boating. This phase of the Operation Dry Water campaign has concluded but efforts to educate boaters and to stop impaired boating will continue everyday throughout the lakes and rivers of Hennepin County.

So far this year, the Sheriff's Office has made 40 Boating While Intoxicated arrests.

Hooked on Fishing 2012

Hooked on Fishing

On July 12, the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities hosted the 5th Annual Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs event.

Sheriff's deputies, special deputy volunteers, and professional bass anglers go fishing with kids on Lake Minnetonka for the day.  The experience reinforces personal development and positive life skills and connects kids with nature.

This year, more than a dozen kids took part -- and they caught some really big fish.  For some participants, this was their first time fishing.

The Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports youth programming and supports Sheriff's Office volunteer units.
