One thing you can do to help our state – be a mentor

When I graduated from college, I had two job opportunities: one was with an oil company in Houston, Texas and the other was to work as an accountant in Detroit.

I chose Detroit.

Turning down a lucrative job offer at what was then one of the fastest-growing companies in the world to work at a lower-paying job in Detroit was not a choice that a lot of people would have made. But I chose to stay in Michigan because the people who hired me made a commitment to serve as mentors and help guide my career.

As it turns out, joining the Coopers & Lybrand accounting firm was one of the best decisions I ever made. I owe a lot of my later success in life to those good friends who took an interest in helping me grow both personally and professionally.

January is mentoring month in Michigan, and I am using this opportunity to encourage businesses across the state to support mentoring. Companies that make mentoring a priority develop better and more successful employees, and they help retain young people in Michigan. It’s a win-win situation.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and his wife Julie, who serves on the Community Service Commission, have agreed to head up efforts to increase mentoring.   Learn more about opportunities in your area.

Mentoring is one thing everyone can do to help build a stronger state. It doesn’t need to be through a formal program – all that is required is a willingness to share a little bit of your time and wisdom with someone who has less experience.
