Lately
there’s been considerable buzz around Michigan’s
emerging information technology (IT) sector, and for good reason. The IT industry has become a crucial part of
the Michigan
economy. Michigan IT firms that develop software or provide web hosting
services, for example, can sell to a national or international customer base
from anywhere they can ship CDs or there is an internet connection and
available bandwidth. Michigan’s
emerging IT industry exports knowledge and imports cash—exactly the kind of economic activity Michigan needs as it continues to diversify its
economy.
Information
technology requires a highly-skilled workforce to produce, process, and
distribute data and help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively. Even
during the latest economic recession, Michigan’s
IT industry added jobs at nearly twice the rate for all other industries in Michigan combined. Read more.
