Insect Investigations:  Using 'bugs' to engage students in the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices

The Towson University Center for STEM Excellence is offering a summer professional learning workshop for elementary teachers of grades 3-5 focused on using insects to engage students in the NGSS science and engineering practices.

Participants will spend three days in July engaging in model lessons aligned with NGSS that focus on incorporating insects into classroom instruction and learning more about insects and the NGSS.  Participants will be challenged to create and then implement their own NGSS-aligned lessons that utilize insects in their classrooms.  We'll meet again in October to share the results of the lesson implementations.  All participants will receive a classroom insect 'starter kit' that contains live insects and the materials necessary to keep them in the classroom.  Successful participants will receive 3 CPD credits from MSDE.  You can read more about the workshop here.

The workshop will take place from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm the following days:

  • Wednesday, July 5
  • Thursday, July 6
  • Friday, July 7
  • Saturday, October 28
