Utilities and Historic Preservation Districts

Recently my office received questions about what requirements utilities have to comply with in a Preservation District.  Cynthia Johnson, a Historic Preservation Specialist with Louisville Metro Planning and Design, provided us with the following information:

In general, Landmarks has had prior success in partnering with the utilities like LG&E, Water Company, and AT&T, as well as Public Works. In working with them, Landmarks encourages the utilities to try to minimize the impact to historic properties wherever possible. They are generally cooperative in accommodating requests from Landmarks when it does not affect service, safety, or operations. In general, utilities do not have to seek a special permit for work in a Preservation District.  Landmarks does try to maintain good working relationships with the utilities so that they are aware of the preservation districts.

Currently, LG&E is replacing the main gas lines in the area where Clifton and Butchertown run together.  Because of this work and the altered pressure level running through the lines new meters will be required.  The meters will be installed on the sides of houses or structures and would only be placed in front of a structure where access would not allow for a side installation.  Hopefully the visual impact of the meters with this strategy will be greatly reduced.
