With summer coming to an end and the start of the school year just around the corner, Safe Kids USA reminds parents and drivers to do their part to keep kids safe as they walk to school. Parents should be proactive and take the time to talk about safety with their kids before they head back to school.
Safe Kids USA recommends that parents walk the route to school with students before the start of the year to assess hazards and select a course with the least number of traffic crossings.
Adults can teach and model the following safety behaviors that all children should follow, even if they don’t walk to school every day:

Here are some simple reminders for drivers:
- Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones
- Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully
- Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours
- Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving
Reminder for your kids:
- They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old
- Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
- Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars
- Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them
 The Louisville Metro Council voted to override Mayor Greg Fischer’s veto of the Landmarks Ordinance. After six months of discussion and debate, which included multiple public hearings in various parts of the community, this bi-partisan vote of 18-7 restored oversight to the Landmarks Commission. This ordinance does not eliminate the Landmarks Commission or the ordinance which helps protect historic properties. It will simply ensure that the Council has the ability to challenge the commission when, as the Mayor stated in his veto letter, “the Commission sometimes oversteps its boundaries at the cost of the public good.”
So what does this ordinance actually do?
- Gives the option for a voluntary pre-application meeting of all interested parties, owners and landmarks commission.
- Require that 101 of the 200 petitioners live or own property within a combination of a one mile radius and/or the council district where the property is located.
- Requires that more residents surrounding a proposed property have to be notified of the process.
- Extends the time before a public meeting has to be held so that the Landmarks Commission has time to do their work.
- Allows the Metro Council the ability to bring up the issue after the Landmarks Commission has acted but only if a majority of the council votes to do so.
In addition to overturning the Mayor’s Veto, the Metro Council also unanimously voted to adopt the recommendations that were part of a Southeast Metro Regional Center Study. The Council also approved an ordinance that asks Restaurants that provide caloric and other dietary information on their web-sites to offer that information somewhere within their establishment.

 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently awarded a contract to improve traffic operations at the heavily traveled interchange of Interstate 64 and KY 1747 (Hurstbourne Parkway) in Louisville. Work is scheduled to begin the week of August 6th to add turning lanes at some of the I-64 ramps and build additional travel lanes on Hurstbourne Parkway.
The first phase of construction will be the addition of a left turn lane from southbound Hurstbourne Parkway to eastbound I-64, resulting in a dual left turn lane. Crews will also be working on light pole relocation and waterline installation.
Other improvements included in the project are:
- An additional lane on southbound Hurstbourne Parkway between Linn Station Road and Interstate 64
- An additional lane on northbound Hurstbourne Parkway at Linn Station Road, resulting in three travel lanes
- An additional left turn lane on the exit ramp from westbound I-64 to southbound Hurstbourne Parkway, resulting in a dual left turn
- An additional lane from southbound Hurstbourne Parkway to the entrance ramp for westbound I-64, resulting in a dual right turn
- Restriping westbound Linn Station Road to provide a triple left turn onto southbound Hurstbourne Parkway
- Addition of sidewalks along southbound Hurstbourne Parkway between Linn Station Road and Bluegrass Industrial Parkway
Lane closures are possible weeknights from 9:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning and on weekends from 9:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 a.m. on Monday. Shoulder closures are possible during daytime hours.
MAC Construction and Excavating of New Albany, Ind. was awarded a contract in the amount of $4.5 million which is being paid through federal interstate maintenance funds. Work is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2013.

Charitable Street Solicitation
Recently the District 11 office has received several concerns regarding charitable street solicitors who are collecting money at the intersection of Taylorsville Road and Breckenridge Lane. Any organization that is collecting money at any intersection of Louisville Metro is required to obtain a permit from the department of Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL).
Along with this permit, IPL issues a yearly calendar that identifies the dates that an organization has a permit to collect. Should you see any organization collecting money at an intersection and they are not listed for that date on the IPL calendar, we ask that you call LMPD at 574-7111.
