Two new Green Triangle Goal Teams are starting in the New Year. We are looking for volunteers interested in creating a greener community for both teams, and volunteers are especially needed for the Network Goal Team.
The Network Goal Team will create a supportive green network to connect people and ideas to each other. Learn more about the Network Goal Team. The Network Goal Team will meet from 6:00 – 7:00pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month.
The Waste/Recycling Goal Team will work to create a comprehensive recycling and repurposing system for the 9th District. Learn more about the Waste/Recycling Goal Team. The Waste/Recycling Goal Team will meet from 7:15 – 8:15pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month.
Both teams will meet in the 9th District at a site to be determined.

There are new drop off sites for waste cooking oil in the 9th District. If you are interested in recycling waste cooking oil from your home into biodiesel, contact 9th District resident Christian Thalacker with Louisville Biodiesel at (502) 727-5673 or christian@louisvillebiodieselcoop.org to receive a FREE 1-gallon recycling bin.

Collect your household waste cooking oil and empty it in receptacles at the Clifton Center at 2117 Payne Street (located on the western side of the building) or Bike Couriers Bike Shop at 2132 Frankfort Avenue to be recycled (this receptacle will be available soon). The goal is for Louisville Biodiesel to create healthy, renewable fuel for small farmers and school buses. MSD has provided free home containers, as keeping oil out of homes’ drains means less clogged sewer pipes.

It’s December, which means that the holidays are just around the corner. No matter what holiday you celebrate, there are ways to make these occasions more sustainable. For a longer list of ideas, visit the Green Triangle blog.

Many holiday traditions include gift giving – let’s first look at ways to think about greening these practices:
- Buy local: buying from local establishments makes our community more sustainable in multiple ways. A higher percentage of your purchase price stays in the community when you shop at a locally owned establishment. Plus, buying local products often cuts down on fuel needed to transport goods. Learn more from the Louisville Independent Business Association. Find a list of some 9th District local businesses on the Frankfort Avenue Business Association website.
- Don’t buy a gift item just for the sake of buying it. Can’t think of anything that Aunt Susan needs? Buy her a gift certificate to her favorite local establishment or restaurant. Or, make a donation in her name to a local charity.
Family holiday meals:
- Avoid disposable dishes. If you must use them, try to find recyclable or compostable products.
- Try to use some local produce. Some of Louisville farmers’ markets are still open in December. See a list here.
- Compost organic materials leftover from preparing meals.
General:
- If you decorate with lights for the holiday season, purchase energy efficient versions such as LED bulbs, and limit the amount of time that they are in use. Some stores will give you money for trading in your old lights for more energy efficient ones.
- If you have a live Christmas tree, turn it into mulch through Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management Services Tree-Cycling, which is available following the holiday. Check the Solid Waste website for dates, to be announced later in December.
